  1. Functional electrical stimulation-based cycling exercise for paraplegics using flywheel and electrical clutch mechanism Shwan Abdulla Supervisor: Dr. M. Osman Tokhi The University of Sheffield

  2. Introduction • People with SCI are at high risk of obesity, pressure sores, cardiovascular disorders • Despite the damage in the spinal cord, the lower limbs` muscles are intact • Functional electrical stimulation (FES) can be used to provide training UKACC PhD Presentation Showcase

  3. Aim and objectives • Develop an in-door FES-assisted cycling ergometer to exercise paraplegics by stimulating single muscle group, the quadriceps • Integrate a novel assist mechanism (flywheel and electrical clutch) to assist the legs, delay muscle fatigue and prolong the exercise Current status • PID/Fuzzy logic-based control for FES cycling (with andwithout • assist mechanism) • Fuzzy logic-based closed loop control for flywheel/clutch • mechanism • Force-drop monitor (derived from clinically recorded data) UKACC PhD Presentation Showcase

  4. Results Fig. 1: Left leg tracking the reference Fig. 2: Left muscle torque (without assist) Fig. 3: Flywheel engagement Fig. 4:Left muscle torque (with assist) UKACC PhD Presentation Showcase

  5. Conclusion and future work • The new proposed assist mechanism can be used to delay muscle fatigue (by 15-17%) and prolongs the exercise Fig. 5: Fatigue improvement percentage (using flywheel and clutch mechanism) • Hardware implementation, testing and validation UKACC PhD Presentation Showcase

  6. Simulation video UKACC PhD Presentation Showcase
