  1. Life In the Oceans Coral Reef Habitats 2nd Grade Science

  2. A Coral Reef • A coral reef is a beautiful undersea wilderness filled with fascinating plants and animals. • It is one of the most populated environments on Earth. • Coral reefs are found where ocean water is warm, clean, and shallow.

  3. The Formation of Coral • Coral reefs are formed by little tube-shaped animals called coral polyps. • Coral polyps have hard outer skeletons that cover and protect their soft bodies. • Most coral polyps stay within their protective skeletons during the day. • At night, fingerlike tentacles emerge from the skeleton and pull tiny animals into the coral’s mouth.

  4. The Formation of Coral Cont. • When the coral polyps die, their skeletons remain in place. • New polyps make their homes on the rocky foundations of the skeletons. • This allows the reef to grow larger and larger.

  5. Life in a Coral Reef • Every bit of space on a coral reef is taken up by a living thing. • Beautiful tropical fish, sea turtles, marine worms, giant clams, sea cucumbers, and sea urchins. • Many people come to coral reefs to snorkel or scuba dive. They do this to explore the beautiful reefs, and the living things they hold. • Some people damage reefs, if this happens it can take hundreds of years for a reef to restore itself.
