  1. Basic Standards Curricular Issues Michael Adelman, D.O.

  2. Curriculum • Must be Objective-Based • NOT just a list of topics • Be specific! What are the specific objectives that relate to what you want the resident to learn?(Std. VI-1.c)

  3. Curriculum • Example: Objective—”The resident must be able to recognize and treat an acute MI” • Curricular components: • The resident shall be trained in EKG interpretation • The resident shall have ACLS training and become certified • The resident must log “X” number of acute MI cases in which they were the one “in charge” of the case.

  4. Curriculum • Must be “outcomes-based” • Why are we asking the resident to learn this piece of information and how can we evaluate to see if he/she achieved the goal? • What outcome do we expect to see from this training? • MUST be measurable • Consider Objective Structured Clinical Evaluations (OSCEs) or Computer Simulations. • MI objective example

  5. Curriculum • Objective—”The resident must be able to recognize and treat an acute MI” • Use OSCE or computer simulation modules to show resident can meet this objective.

  6. Curriculum • Integrate Biomedical Sciences! • Identify specific learning objectives for the basic sciences (Std.VI-1.d)

  7. Curriculum • Integrate Osteopathic Principles and Practices • Write specific objectives! (Std.VI-1.a)

  8. Curriculum • Must show progression from one training level to the next • “A first year EM resident should be able to…” • “A Second year EM resident should be able to…” etc.

  9. Curriculum • Transition from one year to the next should not just mean more of the same! • There should be measurable differences between each year. (OSCE) • There must be more than just additional time in clinic or in the ER. • Additional responsibilities, new procedures, more integrative knowledgebase, etc.
