Warm Up: • What is respiration?
Methods of Science Biologists use specific methods when conducting research Scientific inquiry begins with observation
Observation Use senses to make observations Touch, taste, smell, hear , see Also includes reading and seeing what other have done in the past
Question • 2nd step in the process Does this plant grow more in hot or cold temperatures?
Question Question raised must have a simple concrete answer that can be obtained by performing an experiment How many students came to school today? answered by counting the students present Why did you come to school today? couldn’t really be answered by doing an experiment
Hypothesis 3rd step in the process Testable explanation of the situation This plant will not grow in cold weather. It will grow best at a medium temperature.
Hypothesis Hypotheses can be proven wrong/incorrect, but can never be proven or confirmed with absolute certainty. It is impossible to test all given conditions, and someone with more knowledge, sometime in the future, may find a condition under which the hypothesis does not hold true.
Experiment 4th step in the process Investigate a phenomenon in a controlled setting to test hypothesis Control group: group used for comparison Experimental: group exposed to factor being tested
Design and Construct an Experiment • Take 3 of the same plants and put one in 100 degrees, 50 degrees, and zero degrees • Measure the growth over a set amount of time
Controlled Experiment ONLY 1 factor can change at a time Independent variable: tested factor might affect the outcome of the experiment Dependent variable: results from or depends on changes to independent variable
Constant • Constant: factor that remains fixed during an experiment while the independent and dependent variables change • Type of plant • Amount of water • Amount of light
Data 5th step in the process Information gained form observations Qualitative: descriptions of what our senses detect can be interpreted differently because not everyone sees things the same way Quantitative: data collected as numbers (temperature, length, mass, density)
Record data in tables Temperature= independent variable Height= dependent variable
Data Analysis Graphs and tables Trends and patterns noted Compare expected results with actual
Graph Dependent Variable Independent Variable
Conclusion 6th step in process Judgment, decision, or opinion formed after an investigation
Theory Theory : generalization based on many observations and experiments; a well-tested, verified hypothesis that fits existing data and explains how processes or events are thought to occur. It is a basis for predicting future events or discoveries. Theories may be modified as new information is gained.
Support or Refute Hypothesis Hypothesis: This plant will not grow in cold weather. It will grow best at a medium temperature. Does this prove it? repetition other experiments
Wrap Up • List the steps of the scientific method in order. • Vocabulary: • Hypothesis • Control • Constant • Independent v. dependent variable
