On Day 12 of our study (May 13th, 2012), we focus on the effects of environmental factors on plant growth, specifically in mini terrariums. Students will document observations on the growth of seeds under varying water and salinity conditions. Key focus questions include identifying factors affecting seed growth, assessing optimal water conditions for crops like corn and barley, and determining the salt tolerance of selected farm crops. Participants will analyze their mini terrariums to evaluate which environments promote successful plant growth and compare observations with initial predictions.

  1. Observations Day 8 May 13th, 2012

  2. Objectives: • I can identify and describe terrestrial environments and the effects of environmental factors on organisms. Focus Questions: • What environmental factors affect the growth of seeds? • What are the optimum water conditions for corn, barley, radish, and peas? • What is the salt tolerance of several farm crops?

TerrariumObservation # 4 • In your journal, record today’s date (5/13) and mark it as day 12. • Use the yellow question guide to help your group discuss what has happened in your terrarium and record your observations. • Be sure to consider how to best observe your terrarium without disrupting the environment.

Water ToleranceObservation # 4 • In your journal, record today’s date (5/13) and mark it as day 11. • Look at the your group’s mini terrariums. • What is happening in the cups? • Which environments seem to be the most successful? • Which environments seem to be the least successful? • How is the amount of water in each cup affecting the growth of the plants? • Do you think the prediction you made on day 1 is still accurate?

Salt Water ToleranceObservation # 3 • In your journal, record today’s date (5/13) and mark it as day 6. • Look at the your group’s mini terrariums. • What is happening in the cups? • Which environments seem to be the most successful? • Which environments seem to be the least successful? • How is the salinity of the water in each cup affecting the growth of the plants? • Do you think the prediction you made on day 1 is still accurate?

Review the Focus Questions: • What environmental factors affect the growth of seeds? • What are the optimum water conditions for corn, barley, radish, and peas? • What is the salt tolerance of several farm crops?
