  3. C42 Water Purification - Vocabulary • 1. Coagulate: When chemicals are used to attract contaminants in water into large clumps. These clumps then settle to the bottom of the water tank. • 2. Filtration: The process of removing suspended particles of solid from a liquid, usually by passing the liquid through a material that allows the liquid to move through, but traps the solid particles.

  4. C43 Vocabulary • 1. Flocculate: To add chemicals into water to mix with and pull together the contaminants into large clumps. • 2. Flocculation: A process of removing contaminants from water by mixing in chemicals that pull together the contaminants into large clumps. • 3. Sediment: The clumps formed by flocculation that sink to the bottom of the water. • 4. Sedimentation: The process of letting the clumps formed by flocculation sink to the bottom of the water.

  10. C42 and C43 - Key Points • 1. Water may contain chemical or biological contaminants. (42 and 43 ) • 2. Maintaining environmental health involves establishing or monitoring quality standards related to use of soil, water, and air. (42, 43,44)
