Plagiarism

This guide outlines procedures for faculty to address suspected plagiarism and academic dishonesty. Faculty should meet with the student privately to discuss concerns and follow protocol without returning the submitted paper. During exams, suspicions should be managed post-exam with care and serious communication. It describes potential sanctions for students, including zero grades or disciplinary actions. It emphasizes the importance of adhering to institutional policies and the rights of students to respond to allegations. Faculty cannot assign a failing grade or drop a student from the course.

  2. If you suspect student of plagiarism: • Meet with the student before or after class to discuss your concerns • Do not return the paper to the student; it will need to be sent to the disciplinarian • Let the student know that you will be referring the incident to the disciplinarian

  3. If you suspect students of academic dishonesty during an exam: • Allow them to finish the exam • After the exam, explain the problem as you perceive it • Express concern for the student but communicate the seriousness of the allegation • Listen to the explanation of the student • Assign an Incomplete (I) for the assignment or exam in question until the adjudication process is complete

  4.   5. What can you not do? • You can not assign a student an “F” for the course nor can you drop the student from your class.

  6. What happens if the student is found guilty of academic dishonesty? • The student may choose to accept the Vice President’s decision • The student may request a formal hearing if suspended for more than 10 days. • Student may file a grievance with the college ombuds – Lawrence Woods.
