  2. 1.4 Net Force • Force is a push or a pull • An object does not speed up, slows down or change direction unless a force acts upon it • If more than one force acts on the object then we take the vector combination of forces (net force) • AN arrow represents a vector quantity, its length represent the magnitude

  3. 1.5 The equilibrium Rule • Two forces act on a bag of sugar suspended on a weighting scale: 1. tension in the scale 2. weight • These two forces are equal, they cancel each other, and the bag remains at rest. • When the net force on an object sums up to zero, then we say that the object is in mechanical equilibrium. • Use the symbol large sigma for the (vector) sum.
