  1. Xi You Ji 西遊記

  2. Journey to the West (Xi You Ji) • Journey to the West is hailed as the most famous of China’s Five Great Literary Works. The story was a fictionalized version of the monk Shi Xuanzang’s pilgrimage to India in search of Buddhist scriptures during the Tang Dynasty(1300 years ago). Journey to the West follows the journey of Xuanzang while accompanied by 4 protector disciples he meets along the way. The disciples include: the Monkey King, Pigsy, Friar Sand, and the White Dragon Stallion.

  3. The Characters

  4. Shi Xuanzang • Xuanzang was a true historically living monk in China during the Tang Dynasty. He was known to have embarked on a 17 year journey to India, retrieving Buddhist scriptures. In the story, this task was charged by the Avalokiteshvra Bodhisattva. Along the way, he braved dangers from bandits, predators, and demons. It was known among the demons that consuming his flesh would grant eternal life.

  5. Sun Wukong (The Monkey King) • The Monkey King is the most memorable character of the story. Born from a stone, he attained supernatural powers and challenged the Jade Emperor for supremacy. He was eventually cast down and imprisoned under a stone mountain by the Buddha. The monk Xuanzang rescued him during the Tang Dynasty, as ordained by the Avalokiteshvra Bodhisattva.

  6. Zhu Bajie (Pigsy) • Pigsy was originally the Great Admiral of the Heavenly Seas until an incident of misconduct led him to be cast down to the human world. In addition his physical appearance was transformed into that of a pig. Pigsy met Xuanzang and the Monkey King while he was a vagabond demon. Also ordained by the Avalokiteshvra, he became the second disciple.

  7. Sha Wujing (Friar Sand) • Once the Heavenly General of Raising Curtains, he accidentally smashed a crystal goblet belonging to the Heavenly Dowager. As a punishment he was cast down to the human world and ended up a river demon. After being defeated in combat by the Monkey King and Pigsy, he joined Xuanzang’s party as the last disciple. This was also ordained by the Avalokiteshvra.

  8. Bailong Ma (White Dragon Stallion) • Born into the aristocracy of the Dragon Lords of the Seas; he was condemned to imprisonment after destroying a precious pearl belonging to the Jade Emperor when he discovered his bride’s infidelity. After being rescued by the Avalokiteshvra, he was given the task to await Xuanzang’s party. He serves as the parties’ beast of burden, hence the name.
