  2. Are Energy & Electricity the same thing? • How much energy do we use in NSW? • How much Electricity do we use in NSW? • Energy Production - 2007 to 2008 3590PJ • 1PJ = 9.93 million US gallons of LPG • Energy Consumption - 2007 to 2008 1602PJ • Electricity Generated – 2007-08 76,836 GWh = 276PJ

  3. The NSW Energy Demand is met by 8 primary sources • Coal • Natural Gas • Hydro • Bagasse • Wind • Wood • Solar (Thermal & Photovoltaic) • Petroleum Source : NSW Govt., State of the Environment 2009

  4. Source : NSW Govt., State of the Environment 2009

  5. A key pressure on energy is the increasing demand for electricity. The trend in rising demand in NSW is being driven by population and economic growth as well as changes in people’s behaviour and lifestyles. Source : NSW Govt., State of the Environment 2009

  6. Electricity Generation in Australia 2007 - 2008

  7. Electricity Generation of the Future

  9. How do we make electricity?

  10. Your Turn to do something • Use the Multimeter to find the voltage and current of the solar panel • This is called the open circuit voltage and current • Rotate the panel to the sun and watch the voltage and current • Now connect panels in series and parallel and test the voltage and current • Using the wind turbine see what sort of voltage you can create

  11. Woking Borough Council in the UK • Allan Jones • Population – 100,000 • Start date = 1990 • Energy saved • Energy consumption down by 44% • CO2 emissions down by 72% • Energy efficiency of housing up by 17% • First private wire network • District heating & cooling • Co & Tri generation

  12. Sydney City Council • 2030 plan • Employed Allan Jones • Facts • To reduce greenhouse gas by 70% by 2030 • Using energy efficiency programs ( Solar panels etc) • Divert $2m spent on green power to energy efficiency • Trigeneration
