  1. How to Achieve Automated Accessibility Testing 2022

  2. What is Automated Accessibility Testing? It is a testing method that is performed to make sure that the specific application is usable to almost everyone, including disabled people also. The release cycle is expedited and usability issues are identified at the early stages of development. The aim is to ensure that the application’s services and content can be easily used by disabled people. It’s about streamlining the user interface and accessibility information. With the integration of automation, the entire accessibility testing activity will be carried out at a faster pace, thereby reducing redundancies and improving efficiency. In order to make this testing method sustainable and efficient, it needs to be shifted left.

  3. The need to automate accessibility testing Most of the activities pertaining to accessibility testing are carried out manually because it is not part of the Software Testing Life Cycle (STLC) process. But, experts are of the opinion that automating accessibility testing would be considered to be a strategic and wise move. By shifting left, accessibility defects can be identified and thus the cost of fixing defects will be less expensive. If an accessibility defect has been found in the production stage, then the cost of fixing it will be huge compared to fixing the defect in the design stage itself.

  4. Following are the 4 steps required to perform automated accessibility testing 1. The work should be initiated in the design phase: It is considered to be a good practice to initiate performing accessibility testing from the design phase itself. As Usability is a core aspect of accessibility testing, design plays an instrumental role. The components of the user interface are discussed and worked upon by the developers. 2. Accessibility testing tools need to be evaluated: Accessibility testing can be a complicated task to perform. For this reason, a lot of organizations think of solving testing specific issues manually. But, when the right tools are bought into perspective, then the tasks will be automated. The generic accessibility testing libraries need to be considered. They can be used for different platforms such as iOS, Android and HTML. 3. The need to develop automated regression tests: Regression tests play a key role in automated accessibility testing. The method defined in Step 2 which is testing links and buttons can be used in order to create automated regression tests for accessibility. In this way, the costs of testing will also be comparatively less. Most of the manual testing activities can also be eliminated from the development process. 4. Analyzing and selecting the right test automation platform: Finally, to carry out the testing activities seamlessly, efficiently and in a streamlined manner, the assigned teams and management must make a strategic decision to pick the right test automation platform.

  5. Following are the four key factors that depict the necessity of conducting automated accessibility testing 1. Consistent standards need to be set: Automation focuses on creating consistency not only in the accessibility testing activity but also in improvising the user experience. The basic checks based on WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) need to be taken into viewpoint along with other specific guidelines that may seem to be in line with the testing activity. 2. Prepare accessibility testing goals: In order to improve the accessibility activities, goals should be created as it helps in tracking the progress of the testing process in a pragmatic and coherent manner. Goals help especially in those scenarios where teams are working on multiple websites or a single website with multiple sections. 3. Ascertaining the accessibility for mobile devices: To know about mobile compatibility, the specific WCAG requirements need to be clearly understood. Mobile issues should also be taken into due consideration. 4. Improving efficiency: If screen reader software is used to test the website, you may find issues on individual pages. The process is a bit slow as it might take a few minutes or more for issues to be identified with the screen reader compatibility. If suppose, the number of pages are high in number, then it is going to create an issue as the time consumed will also be high.

  6. Conclusion if you are looking forward to automating your accessibility testing activities, then do get connected with a reliable and professionally acclaimed software testing services company that will provide you specific tools, tactics and expertise to carry out your testing project rewardingly. Necessary strategic guidance and support will also be provided to make you well informed and obtain a clear idea about the outcomes.
