About the Network

Background

Dec 3-5, 2006: Santa Cruz +10, First Inter-American Meeting of Ministers and High-level Authorities of Sustainable Development;

Jun 5, 2007: XXXVII (AG/Res. 2314), OAS Member States resolved to“recognize the Inter-American Network for DisasterMitigation (INDM) as the permanent hemisphericmechanism for strengthening practical cooperationamong intergovernmental agencies in the area ofdisaster reduction, especially by sharing technicalinformation and best practices”.

Mission

Toestablish a Hemispheric Platform for practical cooperation among governmental and inter-governmental agencies in the area of disaster mitigation.

The Network seeks to advance the exchange of lessons learned and good practices, the establishment of a pool of experts and a network of decision and policy-makers, capable to support the formulation of public policy and plans for the reduction of disasters.

1An online Dynamic InstitutionalMapping Tool (DIMT): Anonline relational database withmultiple functions and tools fornetworking among organizations,individuals –experts andpolicy-makers, and for surfingmultiple information sources.

2An online Virtual DiscussionForum Platform forthe exchange and sharingof practical experiencesand lessons learned, whichthrough expert judgment andcriteria provide the bases forthe identification and replicationof “good” practices.

i.e. Flood EWS, CQA, Public-private partnerships, School Retrofiting, etc.

3Face-to-face ThematicEncounters for promotingexchanges and sharing ofpractical as well as policyexperience and the identificationof South-South CooperationInitiatives (SSCI). Thisactivity feeds into the VirtualForum and vice versa, asVirtual Forums may result inthe identification of specificcooperation initiatives.
