Basic Assumptions • You are consistently working to improve your effectiveness. • Your responsibilities include curriculum development (program) as well as teaching (service delivery). • You are the best judge of your own professional performance.
Advantages of FEP • Allows you to set your own priorities. • Provides a flexible process that can be applied to all faculty roles. • Recognizes and places value on your ability to constantly improve your performance.
How do I get started? • Assess your present teaching methodologies (service delivery) as well as your course curriculum (program). • Decide on your focus in both areas.
Methodology Improvements • Ideas that have been used: • Integration of electronic forum as a method for students to critique each other’s work. • Student projects using the internet. • Designing new methods of evaluating student performance in your classes.
Course Curriculum Improvements • Improvement ideas: • (could be combined with methodology improvements) • Choosing a new textbook. • Reorganizing content around a new text book. • Adding new material to an existing course. • Developing new competencies and outline for a new or existing course.
Service Improvements • Ideas that have been used: • Improve methods in organizing a specific collection of materials in the library. • Improving communication within a division. • Improving the distribution of the work on a new committee.
Program Improvements • Program development/change ideas: • Organizing new ways to deliver distance learning courses. • Developing an education block of courses to be offered. • Developing an EMT certification program.
How and When to Choose Your Evaluation Team • Make your choice early. • Choose two team members: • One of your team members must be a peer. • The second member can be almost anyone of your choosing.
Classroom/service Evaluations • Faculty member designs evaluation instrument based on focus of FEP. • Evaluation results: • To be discussed with team members. • Need not be part of FEP summary.
FEP Required Documentation • FEP Summary Page • Summarize the purpose and outcomes of your FEP • You may add additional documentation • Signed Endorsement Sheet • Team members • Department/Division Chair • Appropriate Dean
FEP Timeline • The FEP can begin anytime, but must be completed by June 30, of that academic year • Probationary faculty need to complete every year for five years. • Appointive faculty need to complete every three years.
Ideas for Implementation • Have team member(s) perform classroom visitations • Form FEP groups to cross mentor • Plan to implement changes and evaluate within semesters during your FEP process
