D-Day • D-Day was on June 5th 1994 on a Monday. • During D-day it was very stormy but it was helpful because it helped catch General Rommel by surprise • D-Day was fought because we needed to fight on the Western side. • George C. Marshal was going to be the leader but Dwight D. Eisenhower took over instead. • If D-Day didn’t work we might have lost.

Utah Beach • At 0630 on the morning of June 6, Americans landed on two of five Normandy beaches marked for invasion. • Vll Crops D-Day operations at Utah beach. • An artificial port created of Vierville Draw, was destroyed two weeks later during the massive storm of June 21st. • Heavy fighting took place at ‘‘Fox Green beach’’ in the eastern half of Omaha Beach.

  4. Omaha Beach • LSTs Grounded on the Beach, allowed equipment to be offloaded directly on shore. • The allies released false information about their real objectives. They made ‘‘Plan BodyGuard.’’ • Long before June 6th of the following year Erwin Rommel was dead by his own hand, He committed suicide, had been ordered by Hitler.

  5. Overlord • Lt. Gen. Patton was going to join the battle with the allies after the allies had won the battle • Was called operation Overlord. • Supposed to break Nazi’s hold on Western Europe • Death percentage = 70% • Trained soldiers for what they are doing in battle

  7. Landing • Landing spot was at Juno Beach -Located in France • Canadian forces sailed from England -June 5th -Had bad techniques -340 Canadians died and 574 were wounded - Matthew Halton = spy • The British landed at Gold Beach • Had 25,000 men • 1,000 we’re killed • Moved to Sword Beach

Surprising Facts about D-Day • Normandy = most heavily guarded secret on earth, at the time • Germans had 55 divisions in France • Rommel calculates wrong • 9,386 graves in American Cemetary • 302 graves were unknown • 1557 people were not found • 4868 were buried in British cemetary • 1837 British were not found
