Social Networks Brian Blaszak Erie 1 BOCES
What are Social Networks? • A social network service focuses on the building and verifying of online social networks for communities of people who share interests and activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others, and which necessitates the use of software. • Most social network services are primarily web based and provide a collection of various ways for users to interact, such as chat, messaging, email, video, voice chat, file sharing, blogging, discussion groups, and so on. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_network_service
Social Networks • Part of the Web 2.0 revolution • Growing by the day • All students need is an e-mail to start their own accounts • “Starting ages” range from 13-16 • No “real age” verification process • List of Social Networks
Pros of Social Networks in Schools • Can connect to places halfway around the world • Use of technology (building and designing web pages). It’s here and it’s not going away anytime soon! • Publish ideas and promote themselves • Express themselves
Cons of Social Networks • Internet Predators • TMI (Too Much Information) • Posting pictures and videos • Addicted to the Internet • Becomes a glaring social status in schools • Cause of MANY problems in schools! • Bullying and Violence
THINK BEFORE YOU POST! • Everyone Knows Your Name • Think Before You Post
CONSEQUENCES • Do our students know the consequences for their actions online? • Teens arrested after posting video on Myspace • High School Student arrested from things posted on Myspace • Students impersonating a Principal • Parents also being sued • Woman Denied Degree over My Space Photo
My Space and Social Networks • Problem #1- Internet Predators • Problem #2- http://www.archive.org/ and • http://www.anywho.com • Problem #3- Too Much Information • People post pictures that sometimes give too much information (addresses, license plates, etc) • Problem #4- People just don’t think (jobs are going on this site before/during employment).
Tips for Exploring Social Networks • Create a Fake Account • Most adults make the mistake of creating a fake “adult” profile to access their kids…you need to create a fake account and make a profile that replicates a teenager • Create a fake e-mail “dump account” when doing this • Kids will not think twice to grant access to their “private account”
Prevention It’s not a big deal until it happens to your or it happens in your town!
