    1. POTTER ELECTRIC SIGNAL COMPANY EXCESS PRESSURE SYSTEMS PRESENTATION Excess pressure systems are usually used when there are: Hydraulically calculated loops Extra small orifices. On/Off sprinklers. Excess pressure systems may be used with or without alarm valves. These types of systems prevent false alarms due to water surges. There is no need for a retard on an excess pressure system. Excess pressure systems are usually used when there are: Hydraulically calculated loops Extra small orifices. On/Off sprinklers. 2. There are Types of excess pressure systems The first is a Straight Pipe Riser with a check valve to hold excess pressure in system. It Uses a pressure drop type flow switch. The Flow switch does not need a retard. The first is a Straight Pipe Riser with a check valve to hold excess pressure in system. It Uses a pressure drop type flow switch. 3. An excess pressure pump may pressurize the system to approx. 120psi. Excess pressure must be monitored to send a supervisory signal if the pressure drops 10psi. So the PS120-2 has 2 switches. 1 trips at 130 psi to indicate high pressure such as if the pump did not shut off. The other switch trips at 110 psi to indicate that the pump did not turn on. When a sprinkler opens, the pressure will drop down to city water pressure. The water flow pressure switch trips when the pressure drops down to 90psi. The pressures may be different depending on the supply pressure An excess pressure pump may pressurize the system to approx. 120psi. 4. In the event of a compressor failure, the low pressure switch will trip at 10psi below the normal excess pressure. To test the pressure switches, simply open the BVL. It will bleed off the pressure from the valve to the pressure switch. In the event of a compressor failure, the low pressure switch will trip at 10psi below the normal excess pressure. 5. When a sprinkler opens, the pressure will drop. The water flow switch detects the drop in pressure. (Factory set to trip at 90psi) The low pressure supervisory switch will trip first, but it will almost immediately be followed by the water flow switch. When a sprinkler opens, the pressure will drop. 7. An excess pressure pump pressurizes the system to approx. 120psi. The Excess pressure must be monitored so a 10psi drop causes a supervisory condition. The alarm valve holds the excess pressure in system. The Water flow switch is a pressure type device installed in the alarm line of the alarm valve. 9. When a sprinkler opens, the excess pressure bleeds off. When the supply pressure equals the system pressure, the alarm valve will open. When the valve opens, it exposes the alarm line to the incoming water supply. When the pressure in this line reaches 6psi, the waterflow switch trips.
