  2. ISO • TC94 – Technical Committee: PPE • SC15 – Sub-Committee: Respiratory Protection • WG1 – Working Group 1: General • PG4 – Project Group 4: Test Methods • CD: Committee Draft • DIS: Draft International Standard • FDIS: Final Draft International Standard

  3. ISO 16900 • Part 1 – Inward Leakage • Part 2 – Breathing Resistance • Part 3 – Particle Filter Penetration • Part 4 – Gas and Vapour Filter Testing • Part 5 – Tools • Part 6 – Mechanical Tests • Part 7 – Practical Performance

  4. ISO 16900 • Part 8 – Flow Measurement • Part 9 – Rebreathed Carbon Dioxide • Part 10 – Flame and Heat • Part 11 – Field of Vision • Part 12 – Work of Breathing • Part 13 – Regenerating Breathing Apparatus • Part 14 – Sound

  5. Part 1: Inward Leakage • NaCl, Corn Oil or SF6 challenges. • Panel of 25 test subjects selected by facial dimensions. • Extended exercise regime to include: • Reaching up and down. • Squatting. • Hands and knees. • 18 minutes duration

  6. Part 1: Inward Leakage

  7. Part 2: Breathing Resistance • First part to be published. • Needs to be revised / updated. • Uses EN headform.

  8. Part 3: Filter Penetration • NaCl and Paraffin Oil mist challenges. • Flame photometry and scattered light detectors. • Flow rates 85 l/min and 135 l/min. • Exposure to 150 mg of the challenge aerosol.

  9. Part 3: Filter Penetration • ISO EN F1 20% FFP1/P1 20% F2 5% FFP2/P2 6% F3 1% FFP3 1% F4 0.1% TH3 0.2% F5 0.01% P3 0.05%

  10. Part 3: Filter Penetration Sodium Chloride Aerosol • the number median of particle size distribution is between 0,06 µm and 0,10 µm electromobility diameter, with a geometric standard deviation between 1,4 and 1,8; • the aerosol concentration is within the range 8 mg/m3 to 35 mg/m3;

  11. Part 3: Filter Penetration Paraffin Oil Mist • The number median of particle size distribution is between 0,16 µm and 0,21 µm electromobility diameter, with a geometric standard deviation between 1,4 and 1,8; • the aerosol concentration is within the range 15 mg/m3 to 35 mg/m3;

  12. Part 4: Gas and Vapour • Gas capacity test – 30 l/min • Gas filter validation test at specified flow rates • Gas and combined filters are exposed to a defined test gas under enhanced flow rates to evaluate whether breakthrough time exceeds a specified minimum. • Migration and Desorption tests

  13. Part 4: Gas and Vapour • Extended range of test gases. • OV, OG, AC, BC, NOX • AC: SO2/Cl2/H2S • Low capacity class 1 • OV challenges • 300 ppm • 1000 ppm • 3000 ppm • 6000 (9000) ppm • High and low humidities.

  14. Part 5: Tools • Head forms. • Torso • Breathing machines / Metabolic simulators. • Required performance parameters. • Sinusoidal. • Fixed displacements of 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 litres.

  15. Part 5: Tools

  16. Part 6: Mechanical Tests • Bending • Crushing • Kinking • Drop • Tensile • Rough handling

  17. Part 7: Practical Performance • Walk • Crawl • Climb • Shovel • Lift • Roll • Read • Communicate

  18. Part 8: Flow • Assisted Filtering Devices. • Sensitive to back pressure. • Zero back pressure method. • Plastic bag. • Interactive Flow Rate. • Flow varies with breathing pattern. • Measure pressure drop across the filter as a function of flow.

  19. Part 9: Rebreathed Carbon Dioxide • 3 Test Methods • Method 1 similar to present EN. Main and auxiliary cylinders. • Single breathing tube / ISO headform • Measure at 10 l/min as worst case. • To be resolved

  20. Part 10: Flame and Heat • Retain single and six burner tests. • Hot wire test. • Penetration by hot particles. • Radiant heat test. • Levels 1 and 2 extended arrays. • Level 3 Manikin test based on ISO13506. • Flame engulfment. • Extended burners.

  21. Part 11: Field of Vision

  22. Part 12: Work of Breathing

  23. Part 12: Work of Breathing • Displacement Pressure

  24. Part 13: Regenerating Apparatus • Also known as closed circuit breathing apparatus. • Specifies setting for measuring performance • Tidal volume and frequency: to be changed during the test. • Carbon dioxide supply • Oxygen consumption • Temperature • Humidity

  25. Part 14: Sound • Measurement of unwanted sound – Noise. • Measurement of wanted sound – Warning device. • Use a head form • Higher value but more repeatable. • Small microphones mounted in flat “ear”.
