  1. Geometric Transformations

  2. Congruent and Similar Figures

  3. Congruent Figures • Congruent figures have the same size and shape. • They have corresponding sides that are congruent. • They have corresponding angles that are congruent. These trapezoids are congruent.

  4. Triangle ACB is congruent to Triangle XZY. <A corresponds to <X Side BC corresponds with side YZ.

  5. Similar Figures • Similar figures have the same shape but not necessarily the same size. • They have corresponding angles that are congruent. • They have corresponding sides that are proportional.

  6. To see if a figure is similar to another, check to see whether the sides are proportional.

  7. Symmetry Rotation Translation Reflection

  8. A line on which a figure can be folded so that both sides match. Symmetry

  9. To be a line of symmetry, the shape must have two halves that match exactly. When you trace a heart onto a piece of folded paper, and then cut it out, the two half hearts make a whole heart. The two halves are symmetrical.

  10. United States of America Canada Maryland England Which of these flags have a line of symmetry? No No

  11. - What about these math symbols? Do they have symmetry? + - Yes Yes x Yes Yes

  12. How many lines of symmetry do these regular polygons have? 5 4 3 Do you see a pattern? 8 6

  13. Rotation(Turn) • The action of turning a figure around a point or a vertex.

  14. Click the triangle to see rotation Turning a figure around a point or a vertex Rotation

  15. Translation (Slide) • The action of sliding a figure in any direction.

  16. Click the Octagon to see Translation. Translation The act of sliding a figure in any direction.

  17. Reflection (flip) The result of a figure flipped over a line.

  18. Reflection Click on this trapezoid to see reflection. The result of a figure flipped over a line.
