slide5

Concern over the shortage of applicants in the special education field led to the development of HB 1233. Designed to create a way for individuals, who do not have a degree in education, to enter the special education teaching profession.

  • HB1233 will allow Non-Traditional Route teachers to complete their certification while they are in the classroom (earn while they continue to learn). In a few minutes we will explain how.

“Highly Qualified” Considerations
  • Special Education teachers do not need to be H.Q. if they are in a setting where they do not provide initial instruction (i.e. resource room/lab assistance in a content area)
  • Mild-Moderate Disabilities teachers may co-teach. Core content certified teacher would be teacher of record.

Other avenues will continue to be explored and viable options will be addressed during the next legislative session and/or rule promulgation period.
