Things not to do… Do not make ANY formatting changes • Creates formatting chaos for Thelma • Dated language and experiences Do not copy and paste - Refresh/renew your resume • Connect career-relevant skills, capabilities, & accomplishments to career interests & goals • Focus on “how you performed” tasks & duties, not description of tasks

  4. Points to Remember • All MEM/MF/joint degree resumes are one page • PhD and DEL resumes are two pages • Resumes must be typed in Microsoft Word using Century Schoolbook font (10) • Alternative font – Times New Roman 11

  5. Let’s begin… • Open your resume format Highlight NAME and type in your name Example - THELMA E. JERNIGAN • “Save as” - Program area_Lastname.doc (e.g., DEL_Jernigan.doc) • To assist with formatting questions during workshop, please display format symbols • click paragraph symbol(¶) OR • press Ctrl Shift *

  7. Career Interests Beginning two spaces after colon at end of Career Interests: type in your text (automatically centers)--2 line maximum; separated by semi-colons • Begin with largest career field/interest to more specialized skill or issue • Maximize options ~ don’t be too narrow • All career interests should link to training, experience, or service described in resume Career interests: Environmental, human, and public health with particular focus on water and energy; international development.

Formatting tips… • When using bold or italics DO NOT format punctuation following the text • 2 spaces after a period or colon • 1 space after commas or semi-colons • Most words should be spelled out (street, department) • Exceptions: • 2 letter abbreviation for names of states (NC, CA) • US in front of federal agencies (US EPA) • Standard recognized agencies/organizations (NOAA, FEMA, URS Consulting) • Standard environmental regulations (RCRA, NEPA, CERCLA)

  24. Formatting tips… • Major headings are typed in BOLD-ALL CAPS (i.e., EDUCATION). • Two full line spaces between name and address. • One full line space between each major heading (Education, Professional Experience, etc.). • One full line space or half-spacing (depending on need) between entries within major heading. ??? Need additional space – special trick to be used ONLY between entries within a major heading !!! To replace full line space with half line space… • place cursor in front of paragraph (¶) symbol • Right click on Paragraph • Line spacing = Exactly • At = 6 pt.

  25. Important Dates and Deadlines Friday, September 30 –Resumes due today. Email resume to Thelma (tejernig@duke.edu). Email subject: Del Resume Friday, October7 –Resumes returned to students for editing/corrections/revisions October 7-21 –Complete revisions to resume Friday, October 21 –Email final copy of resume to Thelma (tejernig@duke.edu). Email subject: DEL Resume October 21-25 –Students proofread final resume as it will appear in resume book and online Wednesday, October 26 – Email final resume and signed release form to Career Services December – Resume Book printed and distributed to over 900 organizations and posted online
