  1. BOOK 2: 550i BASICS: OPERATING PRESET SUBMASTERS STRAND 550i CONSOLE Olympia High school Performing Arts Center November 07

  2. ABOUT THIS MANUAL • Before proceeding, please consult and familiarize your self with: • 550i Basics • This manual is intended to describe how to utilize the pre-recorded submasters on our Strand 550i lighting console. It is not intended to teach you about the different displays and recording functions. • What this manual will cover: • How to use pre-recorded lighting settings (submasters) • What this manual will NOT cover: • Lighting console displays and layouts. For more information please see 550i Basics • How to design your lights (deciding which lighting fixtures will work best for your needs). • How to modify, customize, and record your own lighting cues, submasters, etc.

  3. WARNING! • DO NOT OPERATE THE CONSOLE BEYOND YOUR KNOWLEDGE! Attempting to customize your own cues without permission and without the appropriate guidance will likely cause a great deal of school-inappropriate language from the next user. • Seriously...you can easily cause significant problems including, but not limited to • Erasing someone’s show (which may have taken many hours in rehearsal to record) • Erasing your own work • Altering the way the lights are controlled • A host of other problems too complex to discuss here

  4. WHY USE PRE-RECORDED SETTINGS? In a large theatre like ours there are well over 100 separate lighting fixtures used to light various parts of the stage from a variety of angles. The computer allows us very precisely control all of them so we light what we want, how we want, when we want. In our situation, we use the same settings very frequently, so to save time and energy we have several stage settings saved in the console. These can then be quickly accessed for a particular event. For example, the school choirs usually use the same set-up for every choir concert. Ditto for the orchestra, band, and jazz band. However, each of them uses the stage in a slightly different way, requiring different lighting. The choirs only use half the stage, whereas the band and orchestra use the whole stage. The jazz band only uses half the stage, but they don’t use the acoustic shell like the choirs do. You get the idea.

  5. WHAT ARE SUBMASTERS? We use pre-recorded settings for the OHS orchestra (and band, who both use the whole stage), choirs, jazz band and Washington Middle School’s orchestra. In addition, we have 2 settings for house lights (audience lights including and excluding the turntables), 3specials (spotlights which are easily refocused for specific use), and the apron (the part of the stage in front of the main curtain) which is frequently needed for school presentations and lectures. Each setting is saved as a manually operated control called a submaster. SUBMASTER faders This console has 48 + 6 submaster faders.

  6. USING SUBMASTERS (pre-recorded settings) 1: Turn on the console. Instructions for turning on and off the console are included in 550i Basics. You MUST familiarize yourself with this information before proceeding! After turning on the console, to use the pre-recorded submasters... Show title 1: Check to see what show you are in.
