Nanowires are basically a typical electrical wires other than the fact that it is extremely small. A normal

nanowire would have a diameter on the order of a few nanometer s (nm) or less, where 1 nmis equivalent to

10-9 meters. Just as a conventional wire, nanowires uses a variety of conducting and semiconducting

materials like zinc oxide, copper, silver, gold, iron, germanium and silicon. It can also be made from carbon

nanotubes. The production of nanowire uses a controlled conditions some of the methods used include

vapour deposition, suspension and Vapor-Liquid-Solid (VLS) synthesis methods among others. Over the

coming years due to its lucrative properties, nanowires would replace certain materials such as indium tin

oxide (ITO) which is primarily used for capacitance touchscreens as a transparent conductive coating and

even to a certain extent replace LEDs. Nanowires could as well be the main stream components used for

Growing demand for displays, solar cells and batteries, healthy growth of flexible, and stretchable devices,

including sensors, displays and solar cells, launch of new generations of transistors based on nanowire

arrays are some of the factors that would drive the growth of nanowires market. In addition to the

advantage it has over traditional wires such as high-throughput with low production costs, and increasing

research and development activities would in turn boost the nanowires market to a certain extent. Lack of

reliable methods for assembling and building blocks into circuits and insufficient control over properties of

individual blocks while manufacturing nanowires are expected to hinder the growth of the nanowires

market.
