  3. Internal Funding Opportunities Internal Awards: Century II Campaign Endowed Equipment Fund (C2E2) Faculty Scholarship Grant (FSG) Research Excellence Fund (REF) Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURF)

  4. C2E2 - Total Awards $14,000 Purpose: Provide equipment money to assist the research efforts of faculty, staff and students. All faculty and staff are eligible to apply.   5. Faculty Scholarship Grant Total Awards $20,000 Purpose: The FSG assists faculty in the quest to engage in scholarly and creative activities which will enhance their professional development. Tenured faculty or tenure track faculty are eligible to apply.   6. Research Excellence Fund (REF) Total Awards $400,000 Three types of REF Grants: (There is a limit of one submission per Principal Investigator per category.) Infrastructure Enhancement (IE) Research Seed (RS) Mentoring (MG) Each award has a selection committee that makes the award determinations Duration of project one year (July 1 – June 30) Proposal format guidelines exist and must be followed Reports are due at the end of each project

Infrastructure Enhancement (IE) Purpose: Provides resources to develop the infrastructure necessary to support sponsored research and graduate student education. $150,000 awarded annually. • Chair, Dean, Research Center/Institute Directors are eligible to apply. • February deadline announced via: • Tech Today • VPR newsletter • Sent electronically to departments, • Available on VPR website: http://www.admin.mtu.edu/research/vpr/internal/excellence.html

  8. Research Seed (RS) Purpose: Provides untenured faculty with resources to develop externally supported research. $220,000 awarded annually. All untenured faculty in any academic unit are eligible. Tenured faculty, research faculty or research staff can be co-investigators. Mentoring Grants (MG) Purpose: Provides newly-hired untenured faculty (from July 1, 2006) with resources to collaborate with established nationally known researchers not affiliated with the university. $30,000 awarded annually. Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURF) Total Awards $50,000 Purpose: Provides Tech undergraduates, who have at least one more semester at Tech, an invaluable experience to learn the process of research in a professional environment, develop new techniques for research, and earn money at the same time.   14. Limited Submission The VPR office posts limited submission opportunities on the following web site and tracks all submissions. It is a very important internal process for external support. http://www.admin.mtu.edu/research/sprot/funding/Limited_submission_program.htm Current opportunities: are posted on the web site and notification is emailed to deans-l, chairs-l, and directors-l lists. Internal deadlines – first come, first serve Any proposals submitted after the deadline or the maximum number has been determined will not be eligible for submission. Internal competition

  15. Limited Submission Limited Submission “new / unlisted” Last minute opportunities: Immediatelynotify the VPR office Cheryl Gherna at cagherna@mtu.edu with information to post on the web site. Less than ten (10) business days prior to the deadline: all proposals received in the VPR office will be submitted on a "first come first serve" basis. More than ten (10) business days prior to the deadline: an announcement will be emailed to the deans, chairs, directors and normal instructions will apply.

  17. Foundation Funding Opportunities • Perform database searches for specific projects. • Remember Foundations are a different audience than government funding sources.

It is best to assume this is the case and to be sure that your proposal does not conflict with another.
