Progynist – NGO for Women Entrepreneurs Promotion Mission: PROGYNIST is an indigenous non political, non religious and not-for- profit NGO established to promote the welfare and contribution of Ethiopian women to the political, socio-economic and environmental development and management of their country. PROGYNIST believes that empowering women is strengthening civil society and acknowledging its role in sustainable development. To ensure such sustainability, PROGYNIST focuses on projects uplifting women’s economic status by employing gender-fair and environment friendly technology.
Fields of interventions and services to business owners On-the-spot-advice on: • Record keeping • Simple accounting system Information services on how to find: • Access to financial service • Access to raw materials and working premise • Access to vocational training • Access to improved technologies Supporting business owners in Marketing strategies • Participating on exhibition/bazaars • Preparation of Business card and using sign board Entrepreneurship Training
Activities • Provide Basic Business skills training to MSEs especially women • Support in preparation of business promotion tools such as Business Cards, Signposts, etc • Create access to exhibition/bazaar to MSEs • Facilitate access to credit service • Encourage more saving • Advise on ways of applying for working premises • Assist in establishing record keeping system • Advise on what roles to be played in association • Advice on how to get market by showing samples
Achievements • More than 1800 Women were trained in basic business skill and handling and have prepared their books of accounts and aware of costing and pricing. • Women entrepreneurs’ capacity expanded beyond day-to-day business thinking by the additional training on cost calculating and packaging. • More 20 Women participated on exhibition/bazaar and built their capacity. • Most of women taken credit from Meklit Micro finance institution • One woman have got additional skill training (basic tailoring training)
Examples of Success Stories Emebet Mekuria (Weaver) • Situation/Problem: W/ro Emebet Mekuria has 10 children and she is illiterate. She is working with 2 wageworkers. She lacks basic business skills and initial fund. • Support provided: She has taken BBS training and credit from Meklit Micro finance. The BDS unit encouraged her to save and assisted her on how to get market. • Impact: Now she is increasing her working capital and her life is improving.

Enzirt women’s cooperative • Support provided: Eskedar, one of Enzirt cooperative member has taken BBS training and was linked with skills training providers before the cooperative was formed. With her friends whom she found during skills training, she started Enzirt. • After the formation of the cooperative, Progynist BDS unit has helped them in writing application letters to participate on exhibition/bazaar. Currently the Enzirt is capable of negotiating to get access to exhibition/bazaar, which is one market out let for MSEs.
