  2. Reading 1 My future life What will my life be like in the future? In the future, I think I will be a factory manager. I will own a big chocolate factory and make more chocolates than anyone else in the world. And my chocolates will be the most delicious in the world. Every day, millions of people will go to shops to buy my chocolates. Thus, I will have a lot of money. Then I will be able to travel around the world. I will build a big house with chocolate and I will live in the house with my family. I will also give my chocolates and money to poor children. Every year, I will put five golden tickets in five chocolate bars. And the five children who get the ticket can visit my chocolate factory. I will join them so that we can experience my amazing factory together. Wow! How wonderful it will be!

  5. Reading 4 What do you want to be When I was asked this question “What do you want to become,” first, I said I wanted to be a vet (兽医), but then what if I would be eaten by a lion? Well, forget about that job. Next, it was to be a teacher, then, a social worker (社工). If you are asked the same question, what would your answer be? There’s the usual answer “I want to be rich” or “I want to be famous.” That’s nice. But is it enough? No. You need to think that you want to be useful. For example, I’d like to be a doctor and find a treatment for a certain disease, or I’d like to be a computer programmer (电脑程序员) and make some really cool games. Remember, the only way to be rich and famous is to do your job well. You may have never thought about what to do in the future carefully. You’d better do it now. Spend some time thinking carefully about that question. If you have decided your future job, try your best to prepare for it. As long as you love your job, you can do it well. And if you work hard enough, you will be successful.

  7. Reading 6 They can talk! A fridge talks to your washing machine?! It’s possible in the future. But the question is: what’s the point? For example, you could be sitting on your sofa in your living room, and you want to turn on your washing machine. You can shout to the washing machine to turn itself on. If it hasn’t heard, you can ask your fridge to give the order to the washing machine. If you leave home in a hurry (匆忙地), and you realize (意识到) that something may be wrong, what can you do? A scientist answered, “Imagine you are on holiday, and are 200 kilometres away from home. You have forgotten to close your curtains. Don’t worry. You can send a message to your curtain remote control (遥控). If that doesn’t work, you can ask your television or your radio to lend a hand (帮忙).” Nowadays scientists are working hard on this amazing high-tech home. Maybe this will not be daydreams (白日梦) in the future.

  9. Reading 8 The old woman and the doctor An old woman has an eye problem, and is almost (几乎,差不多) blind. So she goes to see a doctor. “If I cure (治愈) you, you must pay me a lot of money. But if I fail, I want nothing,” says the doctor. “OK!” the woman answers. From then on, the doctor uses good treatment for her, and visits her once a week. Every time he visits her, he takes a few things from the old woman’s house. When he visits her for the last time, and finally cures the old woman, there is nothing left in the house. Now the old woman can see clearly. But when she sees her house is empty, she refuses to pay the money. So the doctor sues (起诉) her. In court (法庭), the old woman says to the judge (法官), “I said I would pay him if he cured me, and he said he would get nothing if he failed. Now, he says I am cured. But in fact I am blinder than ever. When my eyes were bad, I could feel that there was a lot of furniture and other things in my house. But now, I am unable to see anything in my house!”
