THE GOVERNORS’ AWARD 2018

The Governors' Award recognizes excellence and commitment beyond the classroom. It is not based on grades or sports/music representation, but on volunteer work, dedication to school despite difficulties, and commitment in developing skills. Nominations can be made by parents, teachers, or students, and the award is celebrated in year group and special assemblies.

  2. The Governors’ Award The award should recognise ‘excellence and commitment beyond the classroom’.

  3. The Governors’ Award • The award is not for; • Students who have received the highest grades in tests or reports. • Students who represent the school in sport or music as this is rewarded by the colours awards. • Students who work hard in lessons.

  4. The Governors’ Award • Some examples the award could be given for: • A student who has taken part in a volunteer capacity for more than 12 months and at least once a month (this could be at Saxon Hill, in the library, beyond school with Brownies or another organisation) • A student who has shown dedication to school despite difficulties beyond the classroom, such as a young carer, again this should have been for 12 months or more. • A student who has shown commitment to developing their skills in a particular area, this could be sporting or another hobby or interest over a 12 month period.

The Governors’ Award • Examples from last year • Staffordshire’s first young poet laureate and charity work with St Giles bookshop. • U16 National Cyclocross Series Champion, racing regularly on the continent in International competitions. • Saxon Hill volunteer for a number of years, showing exceptional skills when working with children with disabilities. • Tamworth Olympic Gym Club – best senior boy 4 out of 5 years. Church youth group volunteer and charity work in Romania. Member of the Staffordshire Youth Orchestra. • Member of the Family Justice Young people’s board • Gained Gold Scouts Award, RYA Sailing instructor & Level 2 powerboat award.

  6. The Governors’ Award • Anyone can nominate: parents, teachers or students • Although you cannot nominate yourself • A short letter, no more than a side of A4, should be completed explaining who should receive the award and why.

  7. The Governors’ Award • The award would be mentioned in a year group assembly in the morning. • Students would be able to attend a special awards assembly in the afternoon and they would be able to invite their parents or carers to attend also. • Those that nominate also are invited.

  8. The Governors’ Award Timeline 2018 • Nominations to be handed to Bader reception FAO Mr Butler by Wed 14th February • A panel comprising Mr Butler, Mrs Forster, Mrs Williams (Governor) and a member of the senior 5 will sit to make a decision about who should receive the award • Awards assembly to take place on an agreed date before we break up for Easter.
