LIMPOPO vs RSA • Mining contributed 7.9% of RSA’s GDP (2006) • Limpopo hosts 90 of RSA’s active mines • Employs 13.8% of RSA’s mining labour- force (2005-2007) • Contributed 15.5% of RSA primary minerals domestic sales (FOR) during 2006/7 • Contributed 8.2% of RSA’s export sales (FOB) for primary minerals in 2006/7 • Shares about 40% of RSA exploration investment capital (new mines and projects) • But contributes 1.6% for local and export sales of selected processed mineral product after KZN (49.4%); MP (20.7%);NW (16.6%) and GP (10.6%)

Mineral situation • Northern Archaen granite gneiss host RSA’s largest diamond mine, copper deposits, corundum and graphite • The Greenstone Belt contains the world’s largest antimony resources, emeralds deposits and gold • The Bushveld Complex (B.C) contains the largest reserves of chromite, PGM’s, vanadium as well as significant reserves of nickel, cobalt, copper, titanium and iron-ore • The overlying Granite Suite within the B.C contains tin, flourspar and dimension stones of class • The Phalaborwa Complex is impresive – it is mined for copper, phosphate, vermiculite and baddeleyite • The Waterberg Supergroup hosts the most unique coal deposits in RSA • The Transvaal Supergroup hosts Andalusite, manganese, gold, limestone/dolomite and best Iron-ore deposits
