  3. Notes • We will be taking notes on figurative language: • IDIOM • ONOMATOPOEIA • ALLITERATION • SIMILE • METAPHOR • HYPERBOLE • PERSONIFICATION • Your notes: WORD + DEFINITION + EXAMPLE

  4. Figurative Language • Idiom: A saying that does NOT mean what it really says • Do you have a chip on your shoulder? • Was this a piece of cake? • Am I all bark and no bite? • Do you have a green thumb?

  5. Figurative Language • Onomatopoeia: Words that represent sounds • KABOOM! CRASH! CLICK! • The clanging pots and pans woke the baby. • The wolves howled at the moon. • The racecar driver revved his engine. • The bacon sizzled in the pan.

  6. Figurative Language • Alliteration: 2+ words that start with the same consonant sound • Becky’s beagle barked and bayed, becoming bothersome for Billy. • Carrie’s cat clawed her couch, creating chaos. • Vee

  7. Figurative Language • Simile: Comparison using like or as • Her hair is yellow LIKE the sun • He is as brave AS a lion.

  8. Figurative Language • Metaphor: Comparison using is or a similar word (and NOT using like or as) • Time IS a thief. • Laughter IS the music of the soul.

  9. Figurative Language • Hyperbole: Extreme exaggeration • I am so hungry I could eat a horse. • I have a million things to do. • I had a ton of homework. • If I can’t buy that new game, I will die.

  10. Figurative Language • Personification: Giving human qualities to non-humans • The stars danced playfully in the moonlit sky. • The first rays of morning tiptoed through the meadow. • My computer throws a fit every time I try to use it.

  11. Silent Reading • Try to find at least THREE examples in your reading today (any combination). • 2 alliteration & 1 idiom • 3 similes • 1 hyperbole, 1 onomatopoeia, 1 metaphor • Etc.
