  1. Unit 2: fundamental laboratory skills Students will explore essential laboratory safety skills and fundamental skills related to microscopy and measurement.

  2. Vocabulary • Personal protective devices • Proper hand washing technique • Micropipette • Centrifuge • Spectrophotometer • Electrophoresis apparatus • Thermocycler • Microscope • Balance • Water baths • Vernier calipers • Protocol • Material safety data sheets

  3. Objective 1 • Demonstrate appropriate use of personal protective devices • What is PPE? • How can it protect evidence & the lab worker? • What is the correct method for removing gloves?

  4. Objective 2 • Exhibit appropriate behavior in the lab. • NO food, drink, cosmetics, lotion, eye drops, etc. Explain why this is important in any lab, and one that deals with material of evidentiary value. • What is the PROPER way to wash hands? • Activity with glow-germ

  5. Objective 3 • Use laboratory equipment correctly & safely • Locate the following in the lab: micropipette, centrifuge, spectrophotometer, electrophoresis apparatus, thermocycler, microscope, balance, water baths, vernier calipers, glassware, rulers. • Proper use & handling of a compound microscope & stereoscope. • worksheet

  6. Objective 4 • Follow laboratory procedures. • What is a protocol? Why should it be followed?

  7. Objective 5 • Comply with policies and requirements for maintaining a lab manual. • Objectives, materials, procedures, data/results & conclusion! • Accurate documentation: explain why this is important in the processing of evidence. AKA the Scientific Method!!

  8. Objective 6 • Demonstrate proper handing of chemicals. • Why do containers need to be properly labelled? • Material Safely Data Sheets: What? Why? Complete the worksheet for two chemicals.
