  4. Facts Sleep is a behavior and an altered state of consciousness. We spend about 1/3 of our lives sleeping.

  5. Facts • The record for the longest period with out sleep is 18 days, 21 hours and 40 minutes. • The record holder reported having hallucinations, paranoia, blurred vision, slurred speech, and memory lapses. Index

  7. Stages of Sleep • Drowsy- Alpha waves occur. Eyes are just closed. • Stage 1- Theta waves appear. Light sleep could be easily awaken.

  8. Stages of Sleep • Stage 2- Sleep spindles, K complexes. Person is sleeping but can respond to noises. • Stage 3 & 4- Delta waves occur. This is a very deep sleep. Person is nonresponsive to most stimuli and slow to wake up.

  9. Stages of Sleep • REM- Rapid Eye Movement. This is where you are dreaming. • REM begins 70-90 minutes into the sleep cycle. Index

  11. Dyssomnias • Insomnia- Difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep. • Hyper-insomnia- Chronic excessive sleepiness.

  12. Dyssomnias cont. • Sleep Apnea- You actually stop breathing repeatedly throughout the night. • You can stop breathing for 10 to 20 seconds. • This can happen 20 to 30 times a night.

  13. Dyssomnias cont. • Narcolepsy- Sudden extreme sleepiness. • Can fall asleep with out warning even standing up. • Very rare. • Never falls into REM sleep.

  14. Parasomnias Index • Nightmares- Freighting, anxiety arousing dreams. Occurs in REM. Nightterrors- Sleeper awakes suddenly in an extreme state of panic. • Sleepwalking- Sleeper arises during sleep and walks about.
