  2. What is Technology?From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technology • Technology is the usage and knowledge of tools, techniques, and crafts, • or is systems or methods of organization, • or is a material product (such as clothing) of these things.

  3. What is Technology? • Technology in our context will have to be limited to the knowledge of how to use the Common Computer for our own personal benefit. • We shall therefore refer to it as CT, Computer Technology.

  5. I. TECHNOLOGY AND YOUA. TECHNOLOGY AND THE ELDERLY. • Technology and the Elderly by Lily Fu • It’s fun ... it’s informative ... it’s innovative. And seniors do not have to be left out! • There is no escaping it. The Internet is here to stay. It has made significant inroads into almost every aspect of our lives, revolutionising the way we live, work and play. And senior citizens need not miss out on the benefits of going online.

  6. Seniors are the fastest growing demographic group on the Internet. In Malaysia, silver-haired surfers form about 7%, compared to 49% in Singapore. • “I’m already retired ... no point learning about the Internet.” • That often sums up the attitude of many retirees. Some feel intimidated by technology. Such fears can easily be laid to rest. After a few lessons with hands-on practice, most seniors should be savvy enough to appreciate some of the uses of the Internet.

TECHNOLOGY AND THE ELDERLY. • Some Samples of Simple & Savvy Senior Citizens: • Our Past Prime Minister at 86 years. • Our Present PM with thousands of Facebook Fans. • Cabinet Ministers and Parliamentarians. • Our friends: Dr. Lim Seang Chye, 91; Oh Boon Lian, • Mrs. Ruth Jevaraj; Mrs. Yap Kim Leng, just learned CT last year

  8. B. TECHNOLOGICAL TOOLS AND THE ELDERLY 1. The Basic Cell Phone. a. To Communicate with family members and friends anywhere at all times. • b. To Contact family members, friends, resources, etc. in case of emergency and vice versa. • c. For Concerned members to Connect with the elderly from time to time.

To fill up one’s Time profitably – • Exercising the body, Extending the mind, Entertaining the soul and Enriching the spirit. • Be mindful that it can bring about Reverse Results too.

In Enlarging social circle of friends and to keep them updated and share experiences, etc. • c. In Entertaining oneself. • d. In Enabling oneself to keep up with CT • Make Technology work for you, and not for you to be a slave to Technology.

In Educating myself via Internet Surfing. • Reading the news . • Running abreast with modern developments. • Researching for solutions. • f. In Easing up domestic responsibilities: • through E-banking, E-shopping, E-payment of taxes, utility bills,  etc

  12. 2. “Professionally” or using CT in my ministry a. Using CT in Sermon preparation and Bible Studies • i. In ‘Riting (typing) out the drafts. • ii. In Researching and Reading up on the topic, and Referring to authoritative Resources. • iii. In Revising the draft. The use of a good word processor. • iv. In Refining the draft – the availability of Ready References. • In Reviewing how to present the message.

  13. 2. “Professionally” or using CT in my ministry a. Using CT in Sermon preparation and Bible Studies • iv. In Congratulating relatives and friends. • v. In Contributing helps to other Christians. • vi. In Channelling gifts. • vii. In Computing the Gospel to others • b. Using CT in the Lord’s Service • i. In Contacting members simultaneously. • ii. In Communicating with members. • iii. In Counselling believers with problems.

LAST WORD ON TECHNOLOGY FROM ME TO YOU • It FOSTERS greater independence. • It FORGES greater alertness to the Mind and enhances the Memory. • It takes you FORWARD and keeps you abreast with current issues and developments. 4. It makes you FEEL relevant and contemporary. Conclusion: Make Technology work for you; Do not be a Slave to it.
