  2. The World Cup The FIFA World Cup is an international football competition played by men’s national teams. It has taken place every four years since the first tournament in 1930 (except in 1942 and 1946 because of WWII). 32 teams compete for the title at venues within the host nation over a period of about a month. Brazil have won the World Cup a record five times, and they are the only team to have played in every tournament. The World Cup is the most widely viewed sporting event in the world: over 715 million people watched the final match of the 2006 World Cup. The current World Cup is being held in South Africa, between 11 June and 11 July 2010. The 2014 World Cup will take place in Brazil.

  7. Facts or opinions? Personally I love the World Cup ..... 5 weeks of car free roads and empty supermarkets while England are playing. Bliss. I just can't see the point of an overpaid bunch of blokes kicking a ball around a field. Women's football doesn't get even the slightest amount of funding or TV coverage. I wouldn't say I'm a die hard fan but I do love a good World Cup. Very disappointed with England. Enjoyed Slovenia/Algeria but nervous now that there is a leader in the group. Looking forward to Germany/Australia this evening. Do you agree with these? Why or why not?
  8. Write your own facts and opinions. We’re going to watch a very short clip of England’s match against the USA. You need to write 1 fact and 1 opinion about the clip.
