  1. Question of the Day Question: What do you think is meant by “Alternative Energy?” Answer: … … … Turn In: 19.2 Worksheet (1/2 Page)

  2. Electricity

  3. What is electricity? • Electricity is the flow of electrons from negative to positive

  4. How did we discover electricity? • Many people think Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity with his famous kite-flying experiments in 1752, but electricity was not discovered all at once.

  5. Discovery of Electricity • In 1800, Alessandro Volta, an Italian scientist, created the first battery • What is a battery? • Device that can convert stored chemical energy into electricity

  6. The First Electric Generator • 1821: Michael Faraday was the first one to realize that an electric current could be produced by passing a magnet through a copper wire • this was the first generator

  7. Electricity for Everyone • 1879: Thomas Edison invents the light bulb • 1882: He designs and builds the first electric power plant • How we get our electricity today

  8. How much would that cost? • If they used 200 kWhr in 1/7 sec • At a cost of .1 $/kWhr for 12 hours $ = 200 kWhr x 12hrs x 3600s x $ .1 1.7 s hr kWhr = $508,235/ night

  9. How do we generate electricity? • Burn something: coal, natural gas, oil, “Nuclear Fuel” • Heat water • Steam turns a turbine (fan) • Turbine spins an electric generator

  10. Generating Electricity Why does he wear a metal suit? What are the 3 things he is afraid of?

  11. Electric Generator Function • In a power plant the spinning of magnet relative to a coil of copper wire generates electricity

  12. Electrical Generation Which spins in a hydroelectric power plant generator, the magnet or the coil of wire? What do they do to the voltage before they deliver electricity to the home?

  13. Electricity Generation CO2 & others Fuels: Coal, Oil, Natural gas Fire

  14. Nuclear

  15. Is there a better way? • Burn something • Heat water • Turn a turbine • Generator generates electricity which can be sent to homes and businesses

  16. Hydropower

  17. Geothermal

  18. Geothermal How deep are geothermal wells? What do they use the steam for? Why is geothermal considered a sustainable energy source?

  19. Wind Power

  20. Is there an even better way? • Burn something • Heat water • Turn a turbine • Take in solar energy and convert it to electrical energy

  21. Solar Panels Solar panels convert photons to electricity

  22. Solar Power Why is solar power important for the Brazilian village? What could solar powered airplanes replace?
