Enhancing Flood Hydrology Studies for Comprehensive Risk Assessments in Southern Africa

To mitigate flood risks, conducting comprehensive flood studies every 10 years in Southern Africa is crucial. This includes enhancing flood estimation techniques, updating data-dependent components, and implementing real-time flood forecasting for urban and rural areas. Emphasis on data collection, high-flow measuring devices at dams, pooling data efforts, and sharing data like raingauge information are recommended for improved flood warning systems.

  1. Flood hydrology (Wednesday - Ndiritu) Recommendations We need to undertake to periodically carry out comprehensive flood studies just like the WR studies - WR extreme floods! Every 10 years. This to include the assessment and improvement of flood estimation techniques the updating of components that are data dependent (eg. Loss curves, ARFs) the implementation of reliable real time flood forecasting for urban and rural areas for the whole of SA

  2. Flood hydrology (Wednesday - Ndiritu) Recommendations We need to improve data collection for flood hydrology - there has been greater emphasis on data for WR assessment For flood warning/forecasting we need real time high flow measuring devices at dams We need to pool our data collection and management efforts - and make all data available for all, especially raingauge data
