Coping with Loss • There are several forms of loss • Death of family member or pet • Divorce in family • Moving away from family and friends • A breakup with a girlfriend or boyfriend • Loss effects us in several ways • Emotions: sadness, anger, and numbness • Make you doubt your mental stability • Physical effects: headaches, high blood pressure, and stress

  5. The Grieving Process • Grieve- to express deep sadness because of a loss • After a loss it is important to let yourself grieve, because it is part of the healing process • Most people go through a process of grieving and this process can help individuals come to cope with a loss

  6. 5 Stages of the Grieving Process • Denial- A person refuses to believe that the loss occurred • Anger- Experiencing anger and rage after a loss • Bargaining- some people make promises to make a change so they don’t have to deal with the loss • Depression- deep sadness in response to the loss • Acceptance- Learning how to live with the loss

  7. Funerals, Wakes, and Memorial Services • Different families and friends celebrate the life of a lost love one in different ways • A wake- is a ceremony that is held for the family and friends to view the deceased person before the funeral • A funeral- is a ceremony where the deceased person is buried or cremated • A memorial service- is a ceremony to remember the deceased person

  8. Help for Dealing with a Loss • Get plenty of rest and relax, but stick to routines before the loss occurred • Share memories and thoughts about the deceased • Express feelings by crying and writing • Don’t blame yourself

  9. Helping Others • Show support: offer to run errands or cook a meal • Let the person know you were there for them • Tell the person that they are strong and can go on • Think of what might help you

Suicide • Suicide- is the act of intentionally taking one’s own life • For youth between the ages of 10 and 24 suicide is the third leading cause of death (CDC) • More teens survive suicide attempts than actually take their own life: Suicide Threats should be taken serious • Each year 149,000 teens are treated for intentional self-inflected injuries (CDC)

  11. Risk Factors For Suicide: • History of previous suicide attempts • Family history of suicide • History of depression or mental illness • Alcohol and drug abuse • Stressful life events or loss • Easy access to lethal methods • Incarceration • Exposure to suicidal behaviors of others

Teens and Emotions • Physical and emotional changes during the teen years can make teens act on impulse, highly emotional and focused on the day • Suicide is a permanent solutions to a temporary problem or set of problems • If you are considering suicide or suspect a friend of being suicidal get help don’t wait

  13. Warnings for Suicide • Feeling hopeless • Withdrawal from family and friends • Neglecting basic needs • Experiencing loss of energy • Taking more risks • Using alcohol and other drug use • Giving Away Personal things

  14. Getting Help • Tell a friend • Take the threat serious • Don’t keep it a secret • Change negative thoughts into positive thoughts

Conflict Resolution and Violence Prevention • Key terms • Violence- physical force that is used to harm people or damage property • Tolerance- the ability to overlook differences and accept people for who they are • Bullying- scaring or controlling another person by threats of physical force • Negotiation- a bargain or compromise for a peaceful resolution • Peer Mediation- a technique in which a trained outsider who is your age helps people in conflict come to a peaceful resolution
