  3. 1. Process Hogmanay • Time • Preparation • During Hogmanay

  4. Hogmanay Time: - December 31st  January 3rd Preparation: - Clean the house - Sweep out & polish the fire place - Place pieces from a rowan tree above a door - Place a piece mistletoe in the house - Burn juniper throughout the house - Pay all the debt

  5. Hogmanay During Hogmanay • At midnight of the Dec 31st • First Footing • Bonfires and Fire Festivals • The Singing of Auld Lang Syne

  6. Hogmanay • January 1st • 1st person to rise up in the morning take Het Pint (spiced ale) to those members who are still asleep • Children get up early and sing traditional song & receive coins, pies, apples and candies. • First footing continues

Tet Holiday Time: - begins on the first day of the first lunar month - lasts for 7 days Preparation: - Decorate the house (peach, apricot, etc.) - Clean the house and ancestral graves - Cook traditional Tết food - Wait for relatives to return home. - Pay off their debts in advance - Go shopping

  9. Tet Holiday During Tet Holiday • At midnight • First footing • Pick trees for luck • Go out (pagoda, firework…) • Stay at home and pray to the ancestor

  10. Tet Holiday • On New Year’s days • Tết 1st (for the nuclear family) The first person to enter a house on Tết xông đất, xông nhà or đạp đất,  One of the most important rituals during Tết. Children receive a red envelope  mừng tuổi (happy new age) in the north  lì xì in the south. • During subsequent days People visit relatives and friends
