Obedience We are told to obey… • God (Acts 5:29), Christ (2 Cor. 10:5) • the faith (Acts 6:7), the teaching (Rom. 6:17), the truth (1 Pet. 1:22) • government (Rom. 13:1-7) • Parent / master (Eph. 6:1, 5; Tit. 3:1) • elders (Heb. 13:17)
Obedience We are told obedience is necessary… • For faith (Rom. 1:5; 16:26; Heb. 11:8) • For righteousness (Rom. 6:16) • For salvation (Heb. 5:9) • For God’s children (1 Pet. 1:14)
Obedience • Out of a sense of duty (Lk. 17:10) • Out of a sense of fear (Phil. 2:12) • But, is there any other motivation?
Psalm 105 • God’s people are called upon to declare the Lord’s marvelous works (vv. 1-6) • The Lord’s marvelous work with the patriarchs (vv. 7-15): Gen. 12-36 • The Lord’s marvelous work with Joseph in Egypt (vv. 16-23): Gen. 37-50
Psalm 105 • The Lord’s marvelous work in the exodus from Egypt (vv. 24-43): Ex. 1-17 • The Lord’s marvelous work in the conquest of Canaan (v. 44): Joshua • That they might keep his statutes and observe his laws (v. 45)
Why Obey? • The marvelous work of salvation through Jesus (Jn. 3:16; note the L.S. in Lk. 22:19) • The marvelous work of the church (Acts 9:31; 1 Thess. 5:14) • The marvelous work of providential care (Mt. 5:45; Acts 14:17; Heb. 13:5)
Why Obey? • The marvelous work of scripture (2 Tim. 3:15-16) • The marvelous work of intercession (Rom. 8:27; Heb. 4:16; 7:25) • The marvelous work of answered prayer (1 Jn. 5:14-15)
Why Obey? • The marvelous work of protection (1 Cor. 10:13; 1 Pet. 1:5) • The marvelous work of heaven (Rev. 21-22) • That they (Christians) might keep his statutes and observe his laws
Why Obey? • Why obey? Duty? Fear? • Note that obedience comes from a profound sense of gratitude and appreciation for all the Lord’s works • Note that obedience is built on the solid foundation of history, not mere feelings
Why Obey? • Note that both emotions (105:1-6) and observance of law (105:45) are required; not one or the other • The key: “remember his marvelous works” (105:5)
