As a personal trainer who helps manage PCOS, I can say one thing (it might hurt you, but here’s the truth bomb!)- PCOS isn't something you can sweat away. Symptoms can be aggravated by excessive exercise or an imbalanced exercise program. Many of my readers are frustrated and confused because they work hard every day and do not see results. In order to move the numbers on the scale and restore their health, they want to know what else they can do. However, their workout programs make training for an Olympic event look effortless! Exercise is a temporary form of physical stress that your body responds to by using stored fat for energy, improving insulin sensitivity, and reducing stress hormones. The body needs rest and nutrition to recover from these bouts of stress if you want to reap these benefits. Without adequate recovery time, your body becomes overwhelmed. There is a possibility that you will experience fatigue, pain, and dysregulated hormones. Symptoms of overtraining include Chronic muscle and joint soreness Missing your period (especially if it is a regular cycle) Fatigue despite getting adequate sleep Feeling stressed or upset when you miss a workout Lack of focus, jitteriness and trouble falling asleep. Your progress has stalled or you have "hit a plateau." This urge to overtrain is caused by a misunderstanding about how exercise affects weight loss and PCOS. The fat burning benefits of exercise have become the sole focus of many women due to misinformation. You would think that more exercise is always better if you followed the simple calories-in vs. calories-out approach. Here are some basic guidelines for managing PCOS for the average woman. 1. Do some strength training 2-3 times a week. The key to improving your metabolic function and insulin sensitivity is strength training. Keep active every day without working out too much. 2. Rather than an intense workout, do gentle yoga, a gentle walk, or an easy bike ride 2-3 days a week. 3. Don't spend too much time doing cardio. Cardio sessions that last for a long time are likely to stress out your bodies. Listening to your body is the takeaway message here. It is important that your workout program nurtures you, not punishes you. It isn't possible to sweat PCOS away, but you can thrive despite it with a balanced exercise approach.
