  1. Individual Preference Is Often The Deciding Factor As is the case with everything we do, personal preference will often dictate what our choices are and how we proceed. This is true in most spheres of life, and very often too when it comes to our favorite sports discipline. When one starts talking to gun and rifle enthusiasts, it becomes abundantly clear that there are many opinions and preferences that will decide what rifle or gun, what model, what brand and what gauge would be the best. Of course most shotguns, say, share many discerning features, even if they are recognized for their many differences. Take, for example, an issue such as gauge, which is often discussed when it comes to choosing the firearm of your choice. Often the most spoken about gauges are specifically the 12 and 20, mainly because they have been proven to offer hunters and shooters the best options to enjoy their pastime whether that refers to target shooting or bird hunting, for example. Americans enjoy shooting and related activities and will therefore often enter into discussions about gauge and, say, brand – whether your preference is for an Ithaca or one of the others, whether you enjoy skeet or going after mountain grouse, for example. In the past the 20-gauge was often favoured by the youth and women because it is lighter than the 12, for example, and also because it offers less recoil when you fire. But these days many men enjoy this gauge as well, since it does offer many great options to hunt upland bird which is favored by many. Also, as technology advances, guns and other firearms are constantly looked at for their features, and new models appear all the time, which means there are more options available now, also in terms of the 20-gauge.

  2. The modern 20-gauge shotguns now are considered to be less restrictive than in the past when, for example, they would be compared to their bigger brother the 12, and they are fast becoming well-supported all-around shotguns for upland hunting, also waterfowl and other birds. Of course the 12 will always be more powerful than the 20, and some enthusiasts will, therefore, not change their mind about which one they prefer. However, with technology advancing all the time, and with more options being introduced to the market on a regular basis, there are many more hunters and shooters that no longer believe – like previous generations – that the 20 is meant for women and younger shooters only. So, whether you like hunting game birds such as quail, turkey, grouse and others, chances are that more and more enthusiasts will start looking at the 20 as an option since it offers many of the best features and qualities of the 12-gauge; however, it stands on its own as a great option for many today. The 20 has been known for a long time, and continues to do so, to be a great option for those that enjoy upland shooting activities. Also, the latest models are heavier than many of those from the past and have become a good option for some in terms of turkey hunting at moderate ranges, for example. The same is true for some newer models which are now put to good use in terms of all-round wingshooting, depending on the ammunition you use too. Even if the 20 is not favored for deer hunting it is great for bird hunting and, say, other activities such as skeet. It has to be said, however, that many hunters find that the 20-gauge holds its own in terms of deer hunting as it can also fire slugs even if it may not be as accurate as other examples such as the 12-gauge. The 20, for many, has better stopping power at short range. In the end it often boils down to individual preference.
