  1. How do I force restart my Kindle? As with most technologies, your Kindle Paperwhite can sometimes freeze or respond slowly. Most of the time, the solution is simple. Try these steps if your Kindle freezes on you.

  2. An e-book does not open or stops responding • If your Kindle Paperwhite freezes or behaves strangely while reading a specific e-book or other content, try restarting the menu and restarting if necessary. • If these solutions don't work, the file may be corrupt. If so, remove the item to see if that solves the problem. Remember, if you bought the book from Amazon, it will be saved in the cloud and you can download it again on your device. If the book is from another source, make sure you have a backup before removing it.

  3. Remove the item from your Kindle Paperwhite as follows: • On the home screen, tap and hold the item. • A pop-up menu with multiple options appears. • Tap the Remove from device option or the Delete this example option (for examples). • The e-book or sample is removed from your Kindle Paperwhite. • Restart your Kindle Paperwhite by pressing and holding the power button for 45 seconds (7-15 seconds on a second generation Kindle Paperwhite). • Read other content to see if the symptoms have subsided. In this case, you can try downloading the eBook again from Amazon by selecting it in the cloud on your home screen or by downloading it from your computer to your device.

  4. The device freezes or is very slow • If your Kindle Paperwhite no longer behaves or freezes as usual, you can usually fix the problem by restarting the menu or performing a hard restart. How to fix Kindle fire wont turn on and Kindle fire wont charge issues.

  5. First run a menu and restart your Kindle Paperwhite: • Tap Menu → Settings. • Tap Menu → Restart. • (Restart is the third item in the drop-down menu that appears.) Your Kindle Paperwhite displays the home screen and a progress bar. After about a minute, the device restarts and displays the start screen.

  6. If restarting the menu doesn't fix the problem, try a hard restart: • Press and hold the power button for 45 seconds (7-15 seconds for a second generation Kindle Paperwhite). • The screen goes blank. • Press the power button again - just by pressing it as if you were putting your Kindle Paperwhite out of sleep. • The home screen is displayed with a silhouetted child reading under a tree. The device will restart in a few seconds and display a progress bar. After this restart is complete, the start screen is displayed. • Sometimes a weak battery can cause the Kindle Paperwhite to behave unexpectedly. If you're still having trouble, connect your device to charge for at least an hour, then try to restart the menu, followed by a hard restart if necessary.
