  2. Yoga techniques can alleviate suffering and promote wellness for those we serve BUT Yoga is generally viewed to be for and taught to the physically fit (at least in Oklahoma City)

  3. Community Classes at a yoga studio -Donation Based -Locally advertised in the office -Most not comfortable attending classes at yoga studio In the Beginning

  4. Sites Adolescent Inpatient, Residential Units (2) Adult Partial Hospital (1) Yoga Studio (1) Providing Yoga Groups at the Treatment Site • Pitching it Meet with administrators Sample Yoga Class taught to administrators Agree to cost

  5. Space to Practice Securing • Space is more at a premium as level of care is ascended • Flexibility key • Surveying room for possibly dangerous items (ie: paperclips, etc.) (Inpatient units) • Reminders to staff before class

  6. Equipment • Towels instead of mats (except at Yoga Studio) • Chairs • Props

  7. The Yoga Groups • Brief description of Yoga • Checking In • Centering • Warm Ups Range of motion

  8. Movements of Yoga • Mind Body-psychosomatic • Body Mind- somatic-psychic

  9. Optimal Biomechanics Neuromuscular training Forward bends Back bends Twists Side bends Inversions Balancing Relaxation • Group Activities (adolescents) Bubbles “Yoga Solution to Problems” • Breathing Techniques • Mantras • Final Relaxation • Checking out

  10. Feedback from Patients “Somebody just standing up there telling me stuff doesn't help, Yoga helps” “My neck felt better” “I used it as my coping skill” “When I leave here I will do Yoga instead of hitting things” “I felt more calm and happy” “My headache went away”

  11. Lessons Learned • How to address the religion issue • In adult groups-hold comments until the end • Train a replacement • Go with the flow • Seeing people in Yoga group can positively impact the therapeutic relationship • Next step-gathering data
