  5. % RH A Time (t) Set Point B Note: Set point in middle of dead band Controls On/Off Control Humidistat Principle of Operation Dead Band • Humidity drops to point B – Humidifier turns on • Humidity reaches point A – Humidifier turns off • The space between A and B is the dead band

  6. Controls On/Off Controls • Three main types of On/Off controls • Control Humidistat • High Limit • Air Proving • Other On/Off Interfaces • Switches • Relays • BMS • Duct Humidistat • / High Limit • Wall Humidistat • Air Proving Switch

  12. Controls Modulating Controls Principle of Operation % RH Modulating Proportional Band A On/Off Time (t) Set Point B Note: Set point in middle of dead band • Humidity is below point B - unit is on 100% • Humidity rises above Set-point - unit ramps down • Humidity drops below Set-point - unit ramps up • The space between A & B is the proportional band

  13. 100% RH RH % Demand Demand signal varies across P-Band 0 10 { 20 30 Proportional Band (P-Band) 40 SP 50 SP 60 70 80 90 100 0% RH Controls Principle of Operation P, PI, and PID Control • Proportional Controller (P) • A proportional controller will send a demand signal that varies proportionally through a range called the proportional band (P-band). The set point is typically located within the middle of this range.

  14. Controls Principle of Operation P, PI, and PID Control • Proportional Control Stabilization • Demand <50% of humidifier capacity • Offset • P-band • SP • Time (t) Demand >50% of humidifier capacity • Offset • P-band • SP • Time (t)

  15. Controls Principle of Operation P, PI, and PID Control • Proportional Plus Integral Controller (P-I) • The integral function looks at the accumulated offset over time and adjusts the output of the controller as required to eliminate it. • Proportional Plus Integral Control Stabilization • Point of Stabilization • SP • Time (t) • ArtificialSP

  16. Controls Principle of Operation P, PI, and PID Control • Proportional Plus Integral Plus Derivative Controller (P-I-D) • The derivative function looks at the rate of change of the proportional offset over time to and adjusts the output of the controller to minimize it. • Proportional Plus Integral Control Stabilization • Point of Stabilization • SP • Time (t) • ArtificialSP • P-I • P-I-D

  17. Controls Modulating Controls • Two main types of modulating controls • Control Humidistat (Electric or Pneumatic) • Transducer/Sensor

  18. Controls Modulating Controls Components Sensor/Transducer (Duct/Wall) Controller Varying DEMAND SIGNAL to Humidifier OR Varying TRANSDUCER SIGNAL to Humidifier (NHTC, GSTC, SETC, MH)

  19. Controls Modulating Controls Transducer vs. Humidistat • Transducer • Signal representing the sensed humidity • Humidistat • Signal representing the demand Example: 0-10 Vdc Demand signal vs. Transducer Signal *Note: DO NOT MIX SIGNAL TYPES

  20. Controls Modulating Controls 0-10V Digital Wall Humidistat • Features • Accuracy of ± 3% • Outdoor temperature set back • No loss of set parameters when returning from power failure • Display • Sensed RH in the space • Set point • Outdoor temperature setback • Demand signal

  21. Controls Modulating Controls 0-10V Digital Duct Humidistat Package 0-10V Wall Humidistat without Sensor • Features • Accuracy of ± 3% • Outdoor temperature set back • No loss of set parameters when returning from power failure • Remote duct sensor • Display • Sensed RH in the space • Set point • Outdoor temperature setback • Demand signal + 2-10V Remote Duct Sensor

  22. Controls Modulating Controls Advantages • Accurate Control • Closer tolerance about set point • Longer unit runtime • Components Durability

  23. Controls Outdoor Temperature Setback Outdoor Temperature Sensors • Adjusts the set point to prevent condensation on windows and other surfaces adjacent to outside air • Compatible with all Nortec Digital On/Off and Modulating controls • Duct or Wall mounted (residential) Sensors

  24. Controls Outdoor Temperature Setback

  25. Controls Remote Fault Indication • Provides set of 4 status relays for remote monitoring of: • Unit power • Steam production • Maintenance/service • Unit fault • All relays can interface with BMS • Standard on GSTC, SETC, MHTC, and all Outdoor units • Optional on NHTC and NHRS

  26. 100% OA, Economizer, and VAV Systems Controls • On/Off Vs. Modulating High Limit • Humidification load varies with the outside air conditions • On/Off high limits work well as long as the OA is relatively stable and dry • Increase in RH of OA could lead to: • Wet duct • Short cycling of the humidifier • Modulating HL adjusts the output of the humidifier as required to maintain conditions in the duct
