Paintings in Museums Online The online edition Paintings in Museums presents a systematic index of the entire holdings of works, both on display and in deposits, owned by nearly 650 museums in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. A comprehensive and current catalogue for over 178.000 paintings, pastels, gouaches as well as mixed-media works from all ages, genres and styles of about 31.200 artists is therefore available to the user.

Paintings in Museums Online The database contains three parts linked to each other: • Paintings: descriptions (title, date of origin, format, classification, style, material and inventory number) of the paintings available in the museums. • Artists: Names and short biographical information on the artists of whom paintings are described; many entries are linked to the database Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon / International Database of Artists (AKL) Online for a more detailed biographical description (separate subscription necessary). • Museums: Addresses and contact information for all museums from which paintings are described.

Paintings in Museums Online • Languages: • Database interface and classification terms in German and English • Entries (paintings, persons and museums) in German. • Two search options (Basic and Advanced Search). • Several search categories: • General: All, Document ID • Paintings: Title of Painting, Date of Origin, Classification, Material type • Persons: Name, Period (general), Year of birth, Year of death, Place • Museums: Museum name, Address • Search results can be printed or e-mailed • Database Host: Gemeinsamer Bibliotheksverbund (GBV)

  6. GIM Online – Basic Search Results list for the basic search „Dürer, Albrecht“: on the top of the list are two person entries, followed by descriptions of 136 paintings of the artists by that name. Persons Paintings

  7. GIM Online – Documents Clicking on the name in the results list leads to the short entry for the artist „Albrecht Dürer“; for many artists a link is available to the full entry in the International Database of Artists (AKL- separate subscription).

  8. GIM Online – Documents The description of a painting contains a link to the museum which owns this painting.

  9. GIM Online – Documents Search for museums and descriptions of their paintings: enter the search term „Pinakothek“; the results list shows the entries of 4 museums by that name, as well as the paintings located at these museums. Museums Paintings

  10. GIM Online – Documents To only see the paintings from one of these museums, use the link „related publications“ on the museum page:

  11. GIM Online – Advanced Search Advanced Search: for the easy combination of search terms e.g. Classification terms and Artist name. In this example the search is for animal paintings by the artist Franz Marc.

  12. GIM Online – Advanced Search The results list shows 73 paintings by the expressionistic artist Franz Marc which depict all sorts of animals, from horses to cats and tigers.
