The online edition Paintings in Museums presents a systematic index of the entire holdings of works, both on display and in deposits, owned by nearly 650 museums in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
A comprehensive and current catalogue for over 178.000 paintings, pastels, gouaches as well as mixed-media works from all ages, genres and styles of about 31.200 artists is therefore available to the user.
The database contains three parts linked to each other:
Opening screen including the Basic Search
Results list for the basic search „Dürer, Albrecht“: on the top of the list are two person entries, followed by descriptions of 136 paintings of the artists by that name.
Clicking on the name in the results list leads to the short entry for the artist „Albrecht Dürer“; for many artists a link is available to the full entry in the International Database of Artists (AKL- separate subscription).
The description of a painting contains a link to the museum which owns this painting.
Search for museums and descriptions of their paintings: enter the search term „Pinakothek“; the results list shows the entries of 4 museums by that name, as well as the paintings located at these museums.
To only see the paintings from one of these museums, use the link „related publications“ on the museum page:
Advanced Search: for the easy combination of search terms e.g. Classification terms and Artist name. In this example the search is for animal paintings by the artist Franz Marc.
The results list shows 73 paintings by the expressionistic artist Franz Marc which depict all sorts of animals, from horses to cats and tigers.
