  10. School & Graduate School of Engineering Science • The school and Graduate School of Engineering Science are unique in name and character in Japan. Their purpose is to develop scientists with a keen interest in practical technology and engineers with a firm grasp of the basic sciences, who may use their experience to develop new technology. • The School of Engineering Science was established in April 1961. In April 1997, the School of Engineering Science was recognized to develop engineering science based on a new concept. The School of Engineering Science is characterized as an institution, which undertakes not only the exploration of novel aspects of engineering that directly reflect modern developments in basic sciences, but the cultivation of new types of engineers and scientists with a creative sense of technology.

OUSSEP • The Osaka University Short-term Student Exchange Program (OUSSEP) provides liberal arts subjects to international students in English. • Students have the choice of participating in the program for two semesters (Full-year OUSSEP) or one semester only (Half year OUSSEP). • OUSSEP is open to students from institutions that have concluded an Inter-University (or Inter-Faculty) Student Exchange Agreement with Osaka University that include provisions for a mutual tuition waiver.

FrontierLab@OsakaU • FrontierLab@OsakaU offers students an opportunity to study with scientists who are top in their field and with them push the frontier of scientific advancement in the following research areas within the Schools of Science, Engineering Science and Engineering. FrontierLab@OsakaU • Applicants are required to have the certificate of either English or Japanese language proficiency. • Both undergraduate and graduate students in science, engineering or other relevant fields who are registered at universities that share a student exchange agreement with Osaka University. • Students from institutions that have concluded a mutual tuition waiver contract with Osaka University will not be required to pay tuition fees.

  21. FrontierLab@OsakaU • Students will be graded on the basis of laboratory work, participation in seminars, oral presentations and reports. • In addition to the courses provided as part of the FrontierLab@OsakaU Program students will also be eligible to participate International Exchange Subjects and Japanese language classes. • A limited number of rooms will be made available at JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) Osaka International Center. The monthly fee is around 40,000 JPY with a daily breakfast. The daily rate is 1,330 JPY for stays in excess of 14 nights but 2,681 JPY for stays up to 14 nights. Both of these rates include a daily breakfast. (1JPY=0.3B)

Regular Short-term Exchange Programs • This program is a short-term study program designed for undergraduate and graduate students from institutions that have concluded an inter-university (for inter-faculty) Student Exchange Agreement with Osaka University including provisions for a mutual tuition waiver. • Only students approved by the office responsible for student exchange at the applicant’s home institution can apply for this program. • Applicants based on the inter-university agreement with Osaka University are required to submit “Regular Student Exchange Course Inter-University Applicant Package” to International Student Affairs Division of Osaka University. This application package is to be sent to the partner universities every February.

  24. Regular Short-term Exchange Programs • In the Regular Class Course, overseas students enroll as special auditors in regular courses taught in Japanese in one of the schools or graduate schools of the University. • In the Regular Research Course, students usually enroll as special research students in one of the graduate schools of the University. • Language requirements depend on the level of the student and the host department or laboratory.  • Prospective students are eligible to apply for the scholarship offered by JASSO and OU.

Engineering Science 21st Century • “Engineering Science 21st Century” is a special program taught in English for Master’s and/or Doctoral Courses. • Graduate School of Engineering Science aims to acquire a good international reputation through increased involvement in the exchange of students and/or researchers and in joint research projects. • All the lectures as well as all the research-related activities and seminars are taught in English. • There is a special program supported by MEXT (Monbukagakusho), Japanese government. • Further information: http://www.es.osaka-u.ac.jp/eng/gradadm/index.html

Engineering Science 21st Century Master’s and Doctoral Courses for Foreign Students Sponsored by Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship • Number to be admitted: 5 for each year • Scholarship benefits: • Allowance: 157,000 JPY per month for the Master’s course • Fees for entrance examination and admission, and tuition: exempted • Screening: The selection will be made on the basis of the application documents and materials. • Date of Entrance to the Course: October 1, 2010 • Application period: Dec. 1, 2009 to Dec. 18, 2009

Engineering Science 21st Century Master’s and Doctoral Courses for Non-Sponsored Students • Number to be admitted: 20 for each year • Financial Supports: Students without any scholarship will receive financial support of at least 20,000 JPY (1JPY=0.3B) per month. • Payment of Fees: • Examination fee: 30,000 JPY • Admission fee: 282,000 JPY (FY2009) • Tuition fees: 535,800 JPY per year (FY2009) • Screening: The selection will be made on the basis of the application documents and materials. • Date of Entrance to the Course: April 1 or October 1, 2010 • Application period: December 1-18, 2009 or July 5-30, 2010

Regular Course • Overseas s students can apply for regular master’s and doctoral courses in Graduate School of Engineering Science. • Applicants can choose one of eight examination subjects: • Advanced Electronics and Optical Science • Material Physics • Chemistry • Chemical Engineering • Mechanical Engineering • Computer and System Science • Bioengineering and Mechanical Science • The admission examination is held around every August according to the policy of each department. • In both courses, applicants are required to have the certificate of Japanese language proficiency.

Scholarships JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) Scholarship Amount of Support Monthly stipend: 80,000 JPY per month (up to 12 month) Relation allowance: 80,000 JPY (upon arrival only) Notes Applicants who receive financial aid from other Japanese sources equivalent to 80,000 JPY per month or more in Japanese yen are not eligible to apply for this scholarship. http://www.jasso.go.jp/scholarship/short_term_e.html OU (Osaka University) Scholarship Amount of Support Monthly stipend: 80,000 JPY per month (up to 12 month) Notes Applicants who receive financial aid from other Japanese sources equivalent to 50,000 JPY per month or more in Japanese yen are not eligible to apply for this scholarship.

  31. Scholarships MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship 5 students who enroll in “Engineering Science 21st Century” on October 1st can have a Monbukagakusho Scholarship (about 157,000 JPY per month for the master’s course and about 158,000 JPY per month for the doctoral course), and their fees for entrance examination, admission and tuition are exempted.
