INTRODUCTIONTO NMQ 810 AND OOG 810 • In the Departments of: • Early Childhood Education • Educational Psychology • Humanities Education • Science, Mathematics and Technology Education • The modules NMQ 810 and OOG 810 are dealt with in an integrated manner, gradually building towards the completion of a research proposal and defence of the proposal in October/November 2013.

  4. Introduction to NMQ 810 • NMQ 810 is: • A research methodology • Focuses on the structure of the research proposal • Introduces students to the key philosophies, approaches, methodologies and methods in educational inquiry. • Based on the premise: basic knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research • In conjunction with OOG 810, aims to assist students to develop their research proposals.

Learning Outcomes NMQ 810 • Understand the ontological, epistemological and methodological foundations of qualitative and quantitative research. • Distinguish among qualitative and quantitative research designs in education. • Identify and develop good research questions. • Review, critique and synthesize the research literature related to a particular research problem. • Choose a research strategy and methods appropriate for the research problem.

Learning Outcomes NMQ 810 • Identify a number of different ways to collect qualitative and quantitative data. • Understand a number of different data analysis techniques. • Know how to establish reliability and validity in both quantitative and qualitative research. • Justify the choice of research methodology, taking into account issues of politics and ethics. • Identify and address possible ethical concerns as well as the political and social implications of research. • Apply all of the above towards the development of a research proposal.

  7. OVERVIEW OF OOG 810 OOG 810 deals with educational theories that underlie and drive research. Learning Outcomes OOG 810 • Develop a broad understanding of the range of field-related education theories, ideas and concepts that mark the current social science and educational landscape. • Develop a basic level of competence to apply the major education theories, ideas and concepts within their educational practices as professional educators working in various contexts.

Learning Outcomes OOG 810 • Develop an ability to apply theoretical understandings to the conduct of basic research in education and the social sciences, and to extend their theoretical insights based on the results of empirical inquiry. • Become aware of and develop their own theoretical stances and how these impact on their professional and scholarly engagement. • Develop and defend a research proposal.

  10. how will you be Assessed? • Integrated Assessment of NMQ 810 and OOG 810 • The assessment for NMQ 810 and OOG 810 is based on the following tasks: • Five assignments forming part of the research proposal, gradually building up to the final proposal. Three of these assignments form part of NMQ 810 and two assignments form part of OOG 810. • A successfully completed and defended research proposal (as part of OOG 810).

  11. assignments • Compulsory. • Contribute to the development of the final research proposal. • Completed in close liaison with your supervisor • No late assignments will be accepted. • Students will not be allowed to re-do an assignment. • Students who obtain 40% and less for an assignment must make an appointment with the relevant lecturer and his/her supervisor before attempting the following assignment.
