  3. About the SJMC • Founded in 1922 • Accredited by the ACEJMC • Located in Murphy Hall, fully renovated in 1999 • Home to more than 1,000 undergraduate students • Dynamic faculty and adjunct faculty • Part of the College of Liberal Arts

Ideal location • Situated in one of the nation’s top media markets, the SJMC is highly regarded among journalism schools. • The Twin Cities metropolitan area is home to: • two daily newspapers • nine television channels • 29 radio stations • 300 advertising agencies • 100 public relations agencies

  5. Program basics • Degree granted: B.A. in journalism • Choose from three program tracks: • Professional Journalism • Professional Strategic Communication • Mass Communication • Balance of practical and theoretical coursework • Freedom to tailor program to suit individual interests

  6. Professional Journalism Prepares students for careers in: • News reporting • Writing • Editing • Producing • Photojournalism In both traditional and emerging media.

  7. Professional Strategic Communication Prepares students for careers in: • Advertising • Public Relations • Corporate Communications • Advocacy Communications

  8. Mass Communication For students who wish to study the social, political, economic and legal aspects of mass communication. • More academic and theoretical • May include up to three professional skills courses • May be interested in research or graduate school

Application process • Students may apply to the SJMC once they have: • Enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) • Completed 30 letter graded credits (at least 13 credits at UMTC), or currently in progress • Completed JOUR 1001: Introduction to Mass Communication, with a grade of “C” or higher Students who are competitive for admission have a 3.0 GPA.

How to apply • Prepare written Statement of Intent • Retrieve and save copy of Student Course Report • Complete online application • Submit Statement of Intent and Student Course Report via e-mail to complete your application. Note: Only complete applications will be considered. Upcoming deadlines: Friday, September 25 at 4 p.m. Friday, February 12 at 4 p.m.

  12. Statement of Intent • 1 ½ - 2 page essay • Serves as a writing sample • Demonstrates your ability to think and write clearly about your academic and professional goals.

  13. Tips • When writing your Statement of Intent • Be thoughtful • Be clear and concise • Avoid spelling and grammar errors • Proofread your work

  14. Student Course Report • What is it? An unofficial copy of your academic record • Shows courses taken, grades earned, GPA You will retrieve your Student Course Report on One Stop  APAS Specific directions online at: http://sjmc.umn.edu/apply

  20. Transfer students We welcome many transfer students each year. Tips and reminders: • Students must apply to the SJMC after admission to CLA. • Once transfer credits appear on U of M transcript, may petition to transfer credits for journalism. • A maximum of 12 credits from other schools may apply, if deemed equivalent. • It typically takes at least two years to finish the major.
