  1. Assignment A03 The Role of Private, Public and Voluntary Sectors in Providing Local Sporting Opportunities and Facilities

  2. What are these Type of Facilities? Public – Run by a national government agency or local council. Examples????? Private – Run by a private individual or company. Examples??? Voluntary – Run mainly by volunteers. Examples???

The Private Sector • Concerned with making money • Money is shared between the people who invest in the business • Provides where there is a demand examples?? • Unlikely to provide minority sports or subsidise costs • Wide range of sporting activities e.g. ....clothing and equipment, links to professional football clubs, golf, tennis ........local examples are????

The Public Sector • Public sector sports facilities include:- Parks, sports centres, community halls and swimming pools • They are funded by local and central government - taxes subsidise these facilities (entry fees) • Facilities could close down due to shortage of money • Must break even • Aim to provide facilities for the whole community – range of activities to increase participation levels. Long opening hours and school holiday programmes

The Voluntary Sector • There to meet local need • Lots of variety in shapes, sizes • Often form a committee – chairperson, secretary, treasurer etc. • May be run by unpaid volunteers • Often hire the facilities rather than have their own • Socially important to the country as not everyone can afford to join private clubs • Important to improve levels of participation amongst the community

Partnerships • Sometimes the private, public and voluntary sectors work together • Councils may invite companies to submit TENDERS to run facilities........the lowest bid usually wins the contract • Voluntary sectors may hire their facilities and/or receive sponsorship from the public sector • A sports facility e.g. belonging to a school (private) may work with the local council (public) to provide a facility in the evenings and weekends
