Abstract These lessons are inquiry driven to allow students the ability to use observations to see actual processes occurring connected to the nature of matter. 9th Grade Activity Students will try and clean dirty water, by selected materials to utilize both physical and chemical changes. • Misconceptions • Students understand rainfall in terms of gravity but do not make the connection of condensation , water cycle. (4th) • Belief that matter is gained or lost as a result of chemical and physical changes (9th/10th) • Mixtures and solutions are chemical changes (9th/10th) Water Project Clean Drinking Water • Objectives • Work cooperatively in groups to come up with a filter design • Construct a water filter that is functional • Test the functionality of the device • Assessment • Performance (4th) • Common (4th) • Science notebooks (4th) • Entrance/ Exit slips (4th) • Best filter debate one power point slide (9th) • Group filter diagram (9th) • Observation sheet/data table (9th) • Questions based off data (9th) • KWOL (9th) Objectives Create a water filter that will clean water based on their knowledge of mixtures Identify chemical and physical changes associated with cleaning water Use observations and the pH scale to determine the purity of water. Conclusion Once over, students should have an understanding of chemical and physical changes, and a stronger use of observational skills and establishing conclusions based off of them.
