  1. The Battle Against Giants Belongs to the Lord1 Samuel 17 • David was a great king because he was “a man after God’s own heart” • David had: • a spiritual heart – seeking to live a godly life • a submissive heart – he was a humble man • asincere heart – he was a man of integrity • The most famous battle in the Bible: David & Goliath

  2. Goliath: • 9 feet tall • armour: helmet & chain mail = 125 pounds • spear: shaft like a weaver’s rod; head = 15 pounds. • He mocked the army of Israel.

  3. David hears Goliath mocking the army of Israel. • 1 Samuel 17:26 (NIV) - David asked the men standing near him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?” • David gets angry because Goliath has offended his God. • Lesson: If you don’t take a stand against the giants that invade your life they keep coming back again and again.

  4. Scene 1: David & Eliab– Focus on the enemy! • 1 Samuel 17:28 (NIV) When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, “Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the desert? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.” • Jealousy – envy – unhealthy competition can be very counter-productive when it comes to doing God’s work.

  5. David proves to be the better man  he ignores the bait. • 1 Samuel 17:29–30 (NIV) “Now what have I done?” said David. “Can’t I even speak?” He then turned away to someone else and brought up the same matter. • David recognizes that internal bickering among his own family is unproductive and the REAL GIANTS  the REAL BATTLE should be taking place out on the battle field not in the camp.

Ephesians 6:12 (NIV) - For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. • Christians – we need to keep our focus on the real battle winning souls for Jesus Christ.

  7. Scene 2: David and Saul – God honours our faith • 1 Samuel 17:32 (NIV) - “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.” • David’s courage came from a heart that was in tune with the heart of God • David had faced many giants already in his life

  8. 1 Samuel 17:34–36 (NIV) “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God.

  9. 1 Samuel 17:37 (NIV) - The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” • When you face giants in your own life – do you live by faith or by fear? • David faced his giant BY FAITH in the living God. • David was ready to take on this giant with only his FAITH so that God’s name would be magnified – not his.

Scene 3: David and Goliath – The battle belongs to the Lord • David stays focused on God. • Matthew 14:30 (NIV) - But when [Peter] saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” • Intimidation. That’s our MAJOR battle when we face giants. When they intimidate us, we get tongue tied. Our thoughts get confused. We forget how to pray. We focus on the odds against us. We forget whom we represent, and we stand there knees knocking. • (Chuck Swindoll)

We get intimidated when we forget the promises of God. • 2 Peter 1:3 (NIV84) - His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. • 1 Samuel 17:45–47 (NIV) - David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will hand you over to me…

  12. … All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s.” • God honored David’s faith. • What giants are you facing today? • Don’t get distracted from dealing with the real enemy. • Keep our hearts right with God • Live by faith • Our battle against giants belongs to the Lord!
