To First Grade Mrs. Jacobs’ Class
Education: I graduated from Weber St. University with a degree in Early Childhood Education in 1996. Teaching experience: I taught kindergarten for 17 years here at Lincoln. Last year I made a change and went to 1st grade. My favorite thing about 1st grade is watching my students reading levels skyrocket. This is me when I was in first grade. I love to teach, read, bake, sew, knit, crochet, cross stitch and read and play with my grandkids. I have a husband and three children. My children are all married, and I have six grandchildren. I also have a cat named Willy.
Our wonderful team of first grade teachers are: Mrs. Mckenzie-Spanish emergent partner Maestra Saenz-Spanish emergent Mrs. Jacobs Mrs. Waters Mrs. Gudgell We work very closely together as a team.
Reading, writing, and math is what we spend most of our time on. Your child should be on a Guided Reading Level of I or J by the end of the year. We also study rocks, soil, plants, butterflies, animals, and community.
Homework for the whole week will come home on Monday. It is due either on Friday or the following Monday. Homework reading books will also be sent home on Monday and will be changed out on the following Monday. You should plan on spending 10 minutes a night on homework and 20 minutes per night reading together. Reading It is very important that your child is reading every day at an appropriate reading level. In first grade we have little leveled reading books from the Reading A-Z program that your child will bring home for homework. Each child will bring home two books each week. Your child should read each book several times in order to increase fluency. I have observed that the children who are diligent in reading their homework books make the most gains in their reading levels.
Our report card is called a “smart report.” There are three possible grades to receive. 3-grade level or above 2-below grade level 1-far below grade level
My six basic rules are: Keep my hands to myself Raise my hand to talk Show respect to my peers Make smart choices No talking during silent work time Pay attention and follow directions I believe in rewarding positive behaviors, and prefer focusing on the positive rather than the negative. Children will be rewarded with “links” which can be exchanged for the treasure box or other rewards. Our class will also earn “links” as a whole to receive class rewards. Children will receive 3 reminders, and then will be given a “think sheet” to take home. The “think sheet” should be discussed and signed by parents.

We go to P.E., music, and computer lab once a week for our special classes. They will have a different teacher during these times.
Your child will bring home a homework folder. Please send it back to school everyday in his/her backpack.
